UMPIRES

The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Umpires are no exception and we need players to umpire home games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink after your game as a thank-you. Same for scoring.

In order to be fair to everyone, the club has an umpire roster on the website. When it is your turn if you are unable to make it, you will need to find replacement. Also, a big thank you to those who have umpired so far this year and those that will.

Parents Vs Juniors

That’s right ladies and gentleman. Many of you have asked. We’ve decided to deliver.
If any of our North Balwyn Juniors and Parents are interested in having a game of Soft Toss baseball for some fun and excitement could you please let your respective junior coaches know so we can begin arrangements? On the day we will also be hosting a baseball game between the North Balwyn Stingers Baseball Club and the premier division Richmond Tigers Cricket Club.
A BBQ will be on offer all day long as well as drinks and goodies. We will also be running a raffle which will be drawn on the day. This will be our last social event held at the ground this year so we will look forward to seeing you all there.
As always juniors in uniform get to enjoy the BBQ for free. Please RSVSP by 20th August.

1st Nine vs Latrobe University - Draw 2-2

The 1sts have continued good form following on from their 3 game wininng streak and have recorded a 2-2 draw against top place Latrobe University.  In what is becoming a worrying pattern, basic errors in the early innings again cost the Stingers the lead while in the bottom of the first and second, Latrobe added a run in each to lead 2-0 after 2.  In the third and fourth innings the Stingers hit back to level the scores at 2-2.  The game remained locked at 2-2 through to the seventh where the stingers had a lead off walk and were looking to pounce.   However excellent defensive plays by Latrobe held the Stingers at bay and after two hours and 8 complete innings the game ended in a draw.

Adam Crothswaite had an excellent day on the mound for the Stingers Crothswaite went a complete game 8 innings, for 6 hits, 2 runs and 1 earned run.

Hits:  2 - Y. Hamani, 1 - D. Keyhoe, M. Houlden, B. Rogers, S. Taylor.

In other results, third placed Diamond Creek had a win over Bundoora and move above the Stingers to second place.  Next week the Stingers take on 4th placed Reservoir in a game which will decide home ground advantage in the finals.

2nd nine vs. Latrobe University - Draw 4-4

The North Balwyn Stingers 2nds had a tough tie today as we gave away a couple of runs on errors – all in the 4th dig. We out hit LaTrobe 6-4 but couldn’t bring across the winning run. The batting was really the tops this week as we moved the runners around and got the hits when we needed to most of the time. We made a couple of base running errors that made a difference on the complexion of this game, we must keep our heads straight as a base coaches and as runners to maximise our chances of getting the runs across the plate. Speedy got the nod this week to start on the bump going 3 1/3 innings giving up 1 earned run on 3 hits with 1 walk and 0 strike outs, Cameron came on in relief in a tight situation with runners on base and went 2 2/3 innings giving up 0 earned runs on 1 hit with 2 walks and 4 strike outs, excellent job by our pitching staff, we just need to back them up a little better in the filed. Having said that we did come up with some great plays in the field to keep their score down to what could have been much worse. All in all a pretty good game however we must keep in mind pretty good doesn’t usually win grand finals excellent usually does.

We are away again this week against Reservoir where we must win to keep a double chance in finals.

Don't forget training Thursday night followed by our traditional pizza fest.

Hits: Cameron, Stephen, John, Matt M., Speedy, James - 1
RBI: Stephen, Matt M., John & Chao - 1

3rd Nine vs Waverley. WON 15 to 4

Hits 4 Tony Clapp 3 David Cranston 2 Hits Alan Shipp Matt St Ong

By the end of the 3rd the score was 11 to 2. 4 more innings to get only 1 run and that was because the run was scored by the batter getting on base with a dropped third strike. Maybe a bit harsh to point this out when you win by 11 runs but we need to keep scoring each dig rather than relying on the one big dig.
Well done to Tony Clapp 4 hits for the day and good to see David Cranston and Alan hitting the ball. Peter started on the mound and Alan closed out, Tom Dundon behind the plate. Good pitching effort and good fielding to back up the pitching seeing Waverley had 11 hits to only score 4 runs. Lets now have a strong performance against the second top side next week.

Under 17s vs Waverley Draw 0-0

As Waverley had 6 and the Stingers had 5 players, there was no game. So we again enjoyed a scratch game!!!!!

Damlow Nomination

Billy Rogers
After a win against Diamond Creek putting us into second spot in the huddle after the game Billy quips "so we are 4 games out of finals now we need to keep winning"

Frenchie would like to nominate MLB.com for freezing during a live game at this point in the game.

The Damlow nomination award is something that is available to anyone in the entire club from juniors right up to seniors and spectators. So if you see something silly, stupid or just plain funny that someone does during the season, on or off-field, then please let us know about it.
