UMPIRES
The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Umpires are no exception and we need players to umpire home games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink after your game as a thank-you. Same for scoring.
In order to be fair to everyone, the club has an umpire roster on the website. When it is your turn if you are unable to make it, you will need to find replacement. Also, a big thank you to those who have umpired so far this year and those that will.

1st Nine vs Bundoora - Won 5-1
The firsts have continued their improvement and recent good form with an important 5-1 win over 5th placed Bundoora Brumbies. In a game crucial to the home final aspirations, Yoshi Hanami started on the mound for the Stingers. In recent losses, the Stingers got off to a bad start and committed errors. This week the Stingers got off to a good start and were able to hold Bundoora to 1 run in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the first, a lead off walk followed by a steal and good team hitting to Bill Rogers and Yoshi Hanami scored the levelling run. The game remained locked at 1-1 with the Stingers leaving runners on base inning after inning until the 5th where the schackles were finally broken and the Bundoora pitcher tired.
Adam Crothswaite had a good for the Stingers continuing on from his excellent pitching outing against Diamond Creek last week and collected two hits and 1 RBI. Sam Taylor also had a good day with the bat collecting 1 hit and 2 RBIs. Alex Canney and Jack Rintoul combined well as pitcher and catcher respectively to close out the game and to keep the Stingers in the hunt for the double chance.
Yoshi Hanami starred on the mound going 4 innings, for 6 hits, 3 strike outs and 2 walks. Alex Canney closed out the game well, going 2 innings for 1 hit and 3 strike outs.
Hits: 2 - Adam Crothswaite, 1 - Alex Canney, Sam Taylor
With the win, the Stingers climb above Diamond Creek to move to second spot on the ladder. Next week sees the Stingers travel to Latrobe Uni to take on the competition leaders in a game which could go a long way to cementing second spot and the double chance in the final.
2nd nine vs. Bundoora - Won 4-3
With the weather looming and a spit or two of rain in the air the North Balwyn Stingers 2nds had a “Blue Collar” win today as our top of the league defence saw us gut it out and make the plays when we needed to. Cameron had his debut on the mound for the Stingers this week and had an outstanding day going the distance for 8 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 6 hits with 4 walks and 6 strike outs, also coming up with a couple of outstanding defensive plays and adding his bit with the bat, fantastic effort Cameron. Look forward to more from this young addition to the Stingers line up. Speedy had a great day behind the plate throwing out a couple of runners in key situations, taking a couple of good catches behind and blocking everything that came his way, well done Speedy.
We are away this week against LaTrobe with our eye on home ground advantage in finals so let's get down to training.
Don’t forget training Thursday night followed by our traditional pizza fest.
Hits – Cameron - 2, Chao – 1.
RBIs – John & Chao - 1

4th Nine vs Glen Iris Lost 7-14
Our Game against Glen Iris started great with 3 quick runs, however GI hit back immediately with 5 of their own. And even though we trailed for the rest of the game, we were never out of it. Good fielding and much better batting in the last few games have made the games more competitive and ultimately more enjoyable.
Good pitching by Mike and Mal......and hits to the following: Jason Povey 3, John Symons 2 doubles, Mike Slape 2, Mal Fawcett 2, Taz Bhatti 1 and a Double by Guy Lamothe.
Also thanks to Glen Iris for making a great day of it with the post game BBQ.

Under 17s vs Diamond Creek Lost 3-12
This week U17s’ Stingers traveled to Diamond Creek to take a tough game after back-to-back glorious victories.
Stingers started the game well scoring 3 runs in the first inning. However, Diamond creek was too good against the Stingers as they kept hitting through the game.
After the first inning, Stinger wasn’t able to dominate against the Diamond Creek starting pitcher.
Hits: Corey McLaughlin – 2, Cory McGeary (double) – 1
RBIs: Cory McGeary & Thomas Dundon – 1 Liam Freeman 2, Thomas Dundon, Harley Scheffer & Corey McLaughlin 1 each

Under 13s vs Croydon WON 14-0
The North Balwyn boys were home to Croydon and weren’t quite sure of what to expect with fill-in coach Mark setting the direction of the team for the day.
Top of the first saw Justin start pitching. The innings was a quick affair, with the first three batters being struck out - and two of them then being put out at first as well after hitting off the tee. The bottom was a run fest with several batters getting walked (Mike, Stephen, Justin, Viv & Brett) and a single to Callum. Charlie hit a big 2 run double and finally Angus hit a single base hit with the seventh run crossing home on the hit. This was a big hitting innings with the score at 7-0 after one innings.
The top of the second saw Justin strike out the first two batters who were also put out at first after hitting off the tee. A walk and 2 batters hit gave Croydon a chance for runs however the next batter was struck out leaving Croydon still a nil score. The bottom of the second continued in a similar vein to the first, with a home run to lead-off batter Jordan, another hit to Callum & bases on balls to Jason, Mike and Stephen. Justin followed up with a home run and walks followed to Viv and Brett. A safe hit to Rohit sent the last run across the plate - another seven run innings. So far it was almost like a cricket score - with one out for 14 runs.
The top of the third was again closed out quickly - Callum came on to pitch out the last two batters and the North Balwyn batting machine returned to the plate. A two-base hit to Jordan, followed by a single to Mike and walks to Callum, Stephen and Justin set things up nicely - for Viv (“Master Blaster”) who coolly stepped up and hit our first GRAND SLAM - i.e. four runs home off one hit.
Unfortunately time was against North Balwyn and time was called with the bottom of the innings incomplete. The final score therefore reverted to 14-nil. The Croydon kids tried their hardest but North Balwyn is a strong batting team and they showed it.
Encouragement award went to Jordan who hit a home run plus a two bagger after threatening to hit the ball hard all season. Special mention goes to Viv for his sensational grand slam hit - you don’t see many of those.
Special thanks to Mark Richardson for coaching a great win, Geoff Steele for umpiring and to Linda for recording the big win in the scorebook.
My (Editor's) apologies for the last two reports not being published.
Here they are, most recent first:
U13's against Knox:
The big road trip to Knox is suddenly a lot easier and pleasant with the new Eastlink Freeway open - it was at least a “free” way for the last time on Saturday before they start charging tolls.
The boys approached this game with a lot of enthusiastic anticipation, knowing that Knox is a Major division team and that we drew with them in the first round of the year. This was a game where we could prove ourselves against a good team.
The first innings started reasonably well, with a walk to Viv to kick things off. Unfortunately three of the next four batters were struck out and after a couple of good steals Viv was left on base at third. In the bottom of the first Justin pitched well to strike out two batters and put another out at first but the top of the Knox batting lineup was very strong and they were able to score three safe hits who all reached home. This closed the first innings at 3-0 in favour of Knox. The North Balwyn boys came off looking despondent and needed to lift their spirits to stay in the game.
The top of the second started well with Jesse and Carey hitting the ball into play but both getting out in the field. (Lesson here boys - the fielders make the outs as much as pitchers). Jordan received a walk, followed by Angus then scoring an excellent hit to third which saw him safe on first. Charlie then took one for the team, getting hit by a pitch and bases were loaded. Unfortunately we were unable to capitalise on this and the innings was closed out with bases loaded.
The bottom of the second saw some excellent defensive baseball with Justin striking out one batter and putting another out at first. Callum followed up with a play from shortstop to first, closing out the Knox innings three up - three down.
The third innings saw an excellent hit to right field by Mike followed by a hit to Stephen. Callum sent Mike home on a safe hit however the innings was closed out with two runners on base. The North Balwyn boys started to sense they could turn this game around. The bottom of the third was another great defensive innings for the Stingers with one strike out by Justin, followed by a put out from Callum to Carey at first. One runner got home and finally an excellent put out at home saw thew innings close with North Balwyn down 4-1.
A change of pitcher in the top of the fourth gave an opportunity for some big hitting. Hits to Carey, Jordan and Jason, and walks (or HPB) to Angus, Charlie, Viv, Justin and Stephen saw several batters get on base and five runs home. The close of the top of the innings saw North Balwyn up 5-4.
The unfortunately the rules of time games caught up and the time was called on the bottom of the fourth after only 4 pitches. Unfortunately for our boys they officially went down 4-1, although we all felt they certainly deserved to win - another 5 minutes and I’m sure they would have. A great lesson was learned on never giving up and continuing to fight until the end - it was a sensational fight-back and one of our best games for the year.
Encouragement award went to Angus who is proving himself a useful player after only a few games.
Special thanks to Geoff Steele for doing a sterling job of scoring for the team - thanks Geoff.
U13's against Ringwood/Forest Hill:
It was a bitterly cold morning for our latest match-up against the Ringwood/Forest Hill team - but much drier than the last time we played them in the rain a few weeks ago.
North Balwyn opened up with Callum at the pitcher’s mound pitching to Stephen. Ringwood/Forest Hill showed some good batting with 2 players getting hits and with 2 getting walked they sent 2 runs across the home plate. Callum pitched well however and struck out three batters.
The bottom of the first however became a bit of a run fest with walks to several batters and 6 runs scored. Jordan learnt a lesson in running hard to first when he hit the ball to their pitcher, who threw to first base in what appeared to be a certain out. Jordan kept running, only to see the Ringwood/Forest Hill first baseman fumble the ball, letting Jordan in safe at first. The innings ended with a beautiful hit driven down the third base line by Justin, scoring two runs in the process and taking North Balwyn to 8 runs for the innings. This innings also included the under 13 debut of young Liam Jackson, who took the opportunity of an under-11 bye to come and help out his big brother. Liam looked like he meant business when he faced up the pitcher, but Liam’s tiny strike zone was too hard for the pitcher and Liam received a walk.
The top of the second innings saw a pitching change when Callum reached his pitch limit very early in the innings. Mike Redfern took over, pitching to Charlie and did well, striking out the first batter. Some spirited batting then saw Ringwood/Forest Hill score 4 runs but not before Mikey struck out another batter. The innings was closed out with a well taken fly by Mikey, making it look easy.
The bottom of the second innings again saw a bit of a run fest with several players again receiving walks. Vivek picked up a nice hit followed later by a 2 base hit to Callum sending two runners home. The innings closed at 6 runs after North Balwyn batted through the list with only two outs.
Ringwood/Forest Hill batted again for an incomplete third innings which included a simple fly to Justin at shortstop and an excellent regulation out from Mikey to Stephen at first. As the third innings was not complete when time was called the final score was 14-6.
Encouragement awards went to Liam for a great debut, and to Charlie, who put in a lot of hard work on his catching at training then did an excellent job of catching in the match.
Special thanks to Linda Ellul for doing a sterling job of scoring for the team - thanks Linda.
