UMPIRES

The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Umpires are no exception and we need players to umpire home games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink after your game as a thank-you. Same for scoring.

In order to be fair to everyone, the club has an umpire roster on the website. When it is your turn if you are unable to make it, you will need to find replacement. Also, a big thank you to those who have umpired so far this year and those that will.

1st Nine vs Mitchell Majors - Won 6-3

The firsts have returned to the winners list with a strong showing over the Mitchell Majors at Broadford last weekend. On a bitterly cold but calm afternoon, Coch David Keyhoe focussed pre game on the start which in previous weeks had been disastrous. Coach Keyhoe also asked for a more intense effort from all players throughout the game.

The game started well with Alex Canney getting his first start on the mound for North Balwyn, pitching to fellow junior Jack Rintoul. Alex Canney and the Stingers dominated the Majors over 6 innings with the only hit for the Majors coming in the bottom of the last which scored two runs, a sacrifice allowed the final run to score.

For the Stingers, despite no runs in the first, 4 runs in the second combined with another 2 runs in the 5th kept the pressure on and it was enough to win the game. Overall, it was a flawless defensive effort this week, something which the Stingers must maintain next week against 2nd placed Diamond Creek. With the win, the Stingers move back above Reservoir to reclaim 3rd spot on the ladder.

Training this Thursday at the ground.

2nd Nine vs Mitchell Majors - Won 20-3

The drive up to Broadford is a good team exercise from the bonding point of view and this week was no different as the boys were being boys up and back. Mitchell Majors being a good group of guys were again good hosts putting on an all you can eat buffet for $5. We had a resounding win this week playing an excellent game on defence except a couple of minor errors. Sam got the nod this week starting on the hill while going 3 innings giving up 3 runs on 3 hits with 1 walk and 2 strike outs, well done Sam. We then brought in rookie Cameron Taylor for his first trip to the mound for the Stingers doing a great job in relief going 1 inning giving up 0 runs on 0 hits with 0 walks, and 1 strike out. Everyone got in to the action on offense this week contributing with either hits or rbis, although we did leave 6 men on base which could be fatal in a close match so need to keep this in mind. Good game guys.

We are away again this week against Diamond Creek so let's get prepared.

Training Thursday night with or without lights, followed by our traditional pizza fest.

Hits –Cameron, & Sam – 3, Nick, James, Randall & Harley – 2, Choa & John – 1.

RBIs – Cameron, Nick & Sam - 3, Matt, James, Harley, Choa & John – 2, Randall - 1.

5th Nine vs La Trobe Uni WON 8-1

Coming off with a loss in the previous week, the 5th was determined not to lose its position in the top three on the ladder. Ben Wang started on the mound and effectively shut down the opponent for two score-less innings, the 5th piled on the runs in the third inning, with several walks and timely hitting from Adam and Ben Wang, which gave the team a 6:1 lead against La Trobe Uni. The 5th scored a further two runs to be in control of the match, but an accident on the field to La Trobe Uni's first baseman, which caused a severe injury to his knee and stopped the game early. The 5th won 8:1 and maintained its position on third spot on the ladder.

Under 17s vs Watsonia Red WON 14-2

First of all, congratulations to all the U17s’ Stingers for the first win of the season.

The Stingers traveled to Loyola Reserve at Watsonia this week and smashed Watsonia Red with solid offence and defense. The game started with a couple of walks to Billy and Tom, and then Jerome singled and Harley doubled to score the first 3 runs for the Stingers. Corey McLaughlin followed with a hit-by-pitch and then Corey McGeary cleaned the bases with a two RBI single. One more walk to Seb and an error by Watsonia Red brought us one more run. By the end of the first inning, the Stingers scored 6 runs for the first time ever.

Thomas Dnudon took the mound for the Stingers and had no problems with Watsonia Red, starting with 3 strikeouts in the first inning.

In the top of second, the Stingers kept hitting and scoring runs. Harley got a base on balls as a leadoff, Corey McGeary again singled to the left field to bring Harley home. Some errors by Watsonia Red allowed us to get more bases and score more runs while Graeme’s hard shot was well played by the third base man. With two outs and runners on scoring position, a double by Jerome and back-to-back hit by Harley, at the second at bat in the inning, brought us more runs followed by a triple by Corey McGeary that scored the 7th run in the inning and forced us to end the inning due to 7-run-rule.
In the bottom of the second, Tom struggled a bit allowing two walks and a hit. However, awesome plays by Seb at second and by Jerome at first to ground balls got us two outs and Tom beautifully finished off the inning with a strikeout while giving up only one run.

In the top of third, although the Stingers were not as dominant as last two innings, leadoff walk to Seb and Billy singled to add a run to reach the total of 14 runs in a game.

Even though Tom again struggled against the Watsonia Red line-up allowing two bases on balls with an error by the Stingers defense in the bottom of third, he finished off the inning with a ground ball and two strikeouts to mimimise a run for Watsonia Red.

By the end of the game we finally concreted a wanted win for the season scoring 14 runs while giving up 2 runs. That was incredible.

Let’s continue this good form for the rest of the season and win more games.

Superb job guys!!!!!!
