NEW MAJOR SPONSOR

The North Balwyn Baseball Club is pleased to announce that this week it has signed a 3 year deal with the Bendigo Bank - Kew East branch. This is fantastic achievement for the club and a testament to the growth in the club over the last few years and the hard work of particilarly Alan Read inputting together the proposal. Stay tuned for more details about this and other exciting developments.

WORLD PREMIER OF THE NEW STINGERS LOGO

Those that were present last Saturday would attest that is was a fantastic day (despite the results) but it was really about the new logo. In the lead up to this season the committee was hard at work coming up with a name and a few months on, under the careful eye of David Keyhoe, the Stingers have a brand new logo. It went throught a number of iterations before the final logo you see today was created and I think most of us can agree that it is a fantastic outcome.

In honour of the new logo, the club is now selling fantastic T-Shirts ($15/$20) and stubby holders ($8)

Warmup / Training T-Shirts are $15 for juniors and $20 for seniors.

NEW STINGERS WEBSITE

Those that have been to our website would see that it has undergone a minor facelift over the last week. The club would like to thank Matt St. Onge (Frenchy) for his work on this project.

PAVILION REFURBISHMENT

Continuing with the announcements, those that were present on Saturday would have heard that the club is able to confirm that $360,000 will be spent on the long awaited upgrade of the Myrtle Park pavilion. This is fantastic news for the club and is the culmination of years of lobbying by successive committees. The City of Boroondara is set to be spend the money this financial year which means that by the middle of next season, the pavilion will be refurbished and ready to use. The refurbishment will incorporate a new roof, changerooms, storage, toilets, kitchens, flooring and other improvements yet to be confirmed.

UMPIRES

The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Umpires are no exception and we need players to umpire home games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink after your game as a thank-you. Same for scoring.

In order to be fair to everyone, the club will be producing an umpire roster. When it is your turn if you are unable to make it, you will need to find replacement.

Results

1st Nine vs Latrobe University - Lost 7-8

The 1sts have gone down to top placed Latrobe University at Myrtle Park in a tight finishing game. With a bye in all lower grades and juniors all eyes were on the main game and it didn't disappoint in terms of a spectical.  In something which is becoming a pattern, the Stingers made a terrible start to the game and in the top of the first the Stingers committed 3 errors, which combined with a few hits to Latrobe allowed 7 runs.

Although a long way behind after the top of the first there was a long way to go and Coach David Keyhoe urged the team to remain calm and continue to make good at bats to keep the pressure on Latrobe. After that the Stingers hit straight back scoring 1 run.

After the first innings errors, the team picked it up and held Latrobe Uni scoreless for the next three innings while at the same time, good team batting scored, 2, 0 and 4 runs respectively.  Heading into the last the Stingers had managed to tie up the game after being behind 7-0.  In the last a lead off hit to Latrobe brought a pitching change and David Keyhoe was brought on to close the game.  But it was not to be as the top placed team got it done and managed the go ahead run on a throw to second base attempting to throw out a stealing runner.  In the bottom of the last needing one run to draw and 2 to win the Stingers could not come up with the hits needed and went down.

After 11 rounds, the Stingers remain in 3rd place with a cruicial game against 4th place next week against Reservoir at home at Myrtle Park.

2nd Nine vs Latrobe University - Lost 3-5

This was a fantastic day for baseball and the North Balwyn Stingers as we had a grand day unveiling the new logo, the only thing that could have made it better was to come home with a couple of wins however it was not to be on this day. With byes across the board except for the 1s and 2s we had a huge bench this week as reward for all the boys who have been doing a great job throughout the year for their respective teams. James started on the hill this week struggling a bit while going 2 innings giving up 4 runs on 4 hits with 4 walks and 2 strike outs. We then brought in Nick going 4 innings giving up 2 runs on 2 hits with 3 walks, and 2 strike outs. We played a pretty good defensive game but the difference was at the bat as we were out hit this week 6-4 while leaving 7 base runners stranded.

We are at home again this week against Reservoir so let's get prepared.

Training Thursday night followed by our traditional pizza feast.

Damlow Nomination

Jack Rintoul - For wearing of a black singlet to training on a freezing night showing off his pipes.

Tom Dundon - Keeping on the training bandwagon, this one goes to Tom Dundon for getting his glove somehow caught up with his slicker forcing him to ungainly attempt a catch, with the ball eventually, quite comically, hitting him. In hindsight it is probably one of those more "you had to be there moments".

So get along to training, you never know what you will see

The Damlow nomination award is something that is available to anyone in the entire club from juniors right up to seniors and spectators. So if you see something silly, stupid or just plain funny that someone does during the season, on or off-field, then please let us know about it.
