UMPIRES
The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Umpires are no exception and we need players to umpire home games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink after your game as a thank-you. Same for scoring.
In order to be fair to everyone, the club will be producing an umpire roster. When it is your turn if you are unable to make it, you will need to find replacement.

1st Nine vs Diamond Creek - WON 3-2
The 1sts have prevailed 3-2 over the Diamond Creek Devils at Myrtle Park. In a game that promised to be tough with teams 2nd and 3rd on the ladder prior to the game, the Stingers' ace Yoshi Hanami started on the mound for the home side and held Diamond Creek scoreless in the first. Matthew Houlden lead off the game with a single, stole second and good team batting by James Roy and Yoshi Hanami allowed the run to cross the plate.
The game remained 1-0 for most of the game aided by some solid pitching by both pitchers and excellent defensive plays by both teams. Good hitting and a couple of errors in the 5th allowed Diamond Creek to score 2 runs and take the lead. Hitting back straight away, the Stingers loaded up the bases but were unable to trouble the scorers.
Keeping the pressure on in the 6th and final inning of the day, Yoshi Hanami was outstanding with 2 strike outs and no runs. In the bottom of the last, down by a run, a lead off walk to Jack Rintoul drew a pitching change and Kyle Bedford of Diamond Creek came out of the game. Nick Howe came in to relieve but could not stop the Stingers as Tim O'meara continued his good form with the bat and hit a double to score a run which drew scores level. Sam Taylor drew a walk and Alex Canney was substututed as a pinch runner. A strike out and another walk saw bases loaded with one out. A ground ball could have sealed a draw for Diamond Creek and a safe hit would see the Stingers win. Back to the top of the order Matthew Houlden came up with the final hit which sealed victory for the Stingers. With the last gasp win the Stingers now move above Diamond Creek on the ladder to sit 2nd, 2 games behind the ladder leaders Latrobe Uni.
Hits: Tim O'meara (1 double), Yoshi Hanami (1 double), Matthew Houlden - 2 each
RBIs: Tim O'meara, Yoshi Hanami, Matthew Houlden - 1 each
Pitching Stats: Yoshi Hanami - 6 innings, 3 hits, 1 earned run, 4 strike outs.
Special thanks for the support from some of the younger members of the club. Hope you enjoyed the game!
2nd Nine vs Diamond Creek - WON 9-1
A fantastic TEAM win this week by the Stingers 2nds as everyone contributed to a great group triumph. We welcome Tony and Adam for their debuts to the 2nds with both of them coming up with some great defensive plays. Randall started on the hill this week going 3 innings giving up 1 earned run on 5 hits with 3 walks and 2 strike outs. We then brought in Adam Crosthwaite who has not seen any action on the hill for a few years who blew them away going 2 innings giving up 0 runs on 0 hits with 1 walk and 4 strike outs, well done Adam. A very solid defensive game again this week as the scorer only had to get the red ink out one time as we were ready to play right off the first pitch and did a fantastic job backing up the pitcher the first three innings as we stranded 8 runners, only letting one run score. Very timely hitting on this fine day for the Stingers as we got the hits when we needed them, mixing in some great small ball with ground balls to the right side advancing the runners or scoring them while we only left 4 runners on base for the day – WELL DONE GUYS. A special thanks to the juniors who cheered us on.
We are away next week against Bundoora so let's get ready and make an effort to get to training Thursday night followed by our now traditional pizza fest.

Round 8 report (last week's): 2nd nine vs. Mitchell Majors - WON 30-3
A resounding win this week by the Stingers 2nds as we welcome back to the hill Chao Shih who hasn’t pitched for a few years now who did a fantastic job going 2 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 2 hits with 1 walk and 3 strike outs. We then brought in Mark Filbey who again has not seen any action on the hill for a few years who blew them away going 1 inning giving up 0 runs on 0 hits with 0 walks and 1 strike out, well done Mark. We then brought in Rookie pitcher Matt Mulcahy who did a good job closing it out going 1 inning giving up 0 earned runs on 1 hit with 1 walk, 1 hit batter and 2 strike outs. A very solid defensive game again this week as the scorer only had to get the red ink out twice however this is something we need to look after more closely as both of these errors cost us runs and against a good side could mean the difference in the game. A great hitting day for the Stingers as can be seen by the score line, number of hits and rbis below.
Thanks to all the juniors and Mums and Dads for staying for the game and giving us a big boost, hope you enjoyed your hot dogs.
Another home stand next week against Diamond Creek to prepare for so let’s get ready and make an effort to get to training Thursday night followed by our now traditional pizza fest.

3rd Nine vs Research Won 9-12

We have won 5 games this season and this was by far the best or at least the most valuable.
We have maintained our spot in the top 4 and with a tough run over the next 5 weeks this win
against the 2nd top side was very important.
We got off to a good start with 2 runs in the first dig and 6 in the second, we took a grip
on the game. Things slowed right down when the next 4 digs scored zero and Westgarth
kept on scoring making the last dig very important for us to score. 2 hits 2 base on balls
and 1 error to Westgarth saw North scoring 4 runs in the last to give us a 6 run lead enough
to hold on for a win. The highlight for me this game was the batting of Tony Clapp and John
Symonds. Batting at 8 and 9 both getting 2 hits each and their other 2 at bats making
Westgarth having to make plays to get them out.
Peter Clapp started on the mound before Paul C relieved. A great come back from last week
when 7 runs were scored in the first dig Peter only gave up 5 when relived in the sixth
dig.
Welcome to Nick Chao, first game this season in the thirds and a Welcome back to Alan Shipp, a
Nth Balwyn Life member's first game in 6 years.
4th Nine vs Latrobe Uni Lost 16-1
No report received.
5th Nine vs Watsonia Black -Lost 15-9
The 5th team did not have an ideal start to their game against Watsonia Black, commiting numerous infield errors and allowing the opponents to score easily. Matt Wang pitched well on the mound, but poor defence from the 5th gave up more runs in the 2nd and the 3rd innings, although the team fought back and close the gap to 4 runs with one inning to play, it was a little too late, in the end the 5th lost 9-15. Hopefully the team can bounce back and win this Saturday!!"

Little League vs Ringwood/Forest Hill
The North Balwyn Stingers boys turned up on a cold morning at Proclamation Park in Ringwood a bit unsure of how strong their opposition would be - have they improved? Has their pitching improved? Can they play well in the wet?
The top of the first innings showed quickly that the difference between the two teams has not changed. No one scored hits in the first innings as the underskilled Ringwood/Forest Hill team struggled to throw strikes - the first five batters were walked, with the first four of them crossing the home plate to score runs. Walks went to Jordan, Stephen, Justin, Callum and Rohit, with Jason getting his base being hit by a pitched ball.
In the bottom of the innings Mike stepped onto the pitchers mound. The first batter put the ball into play with a hit to second which was dispatched quickly by Jason to Viv at first - this was a play which showed the boys have been working on their fielding and they made it look easy. The Ringwood/Forest Hill team make up for their defensive skills with reasonably strong batting with the next three batter scoring hits. North Balwyn settled things down with a simple fly to Jordan at third, taken well so it looked easy again. Mikey closed the innings out with a “K” on the next batter (that’s a strikeout for those parents who aren’t following). After the first innings the score was 4-1 our way.
The second innings continued in a similar vein, this time with safe hits to Jordan, Steven and Brett, and walks to Mike, Callum, Charlie and Jason and 4 runners crossing he home plate. Callum was put out at third amid much controversy, running on Brett’s hit. The out occurred due to a deliberate obstruction by the Ringwood shortstop which wasn’t seen by the umpire. Unfortunately the umpire had to give him out and the boys sportingly accepted the umpire’s decision. It didn’t make much difference to the match as the Ringwood/Forest Hill second innings only saw 4 batters - with the first batter struck out, the second out to a fly at first and a regulation fly to first and simple put out at first. After the second the score was 8-1.
The top of the third saw the batting slugfest continue with hits to Steven and Viv and several walks. Four runners came home before the third out. Time was called with only the top of the third innings completed therefore the final score reverted to the second innings (last completed innings) score of 8-1. Encouragement award went to Mike Redfern for his pitching effort, his steady improvement in skills and recent form. It also recognises his attitude to the game, in particular his serious approach to training.
Special mention to the parents who endured Antarctic conditions and all stuck it out in very cold and wet conditions.
