UMPIRES

The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Umpires are no exception and we need players to umpire home games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink after your game as a thank-you. Same for scoring.

In order to be fair to everyone, the club will be producing an umpire roster. When it is your turn if you are unable to make it, you will need to find replacement.

1st Nine vs Mitchell Majors - WON 9-3

In a crucial game in the context of the season and consolidation in the 4, the firsts have had an important win in front of the biggest crowd of the season. With Yoshi out through injury, Sam Taylor got the start and pitched superbly with a complete game and no earned runs. Offensively hits were scattered up and down the order but still much improvement is needed to capatilise on runners in scoring position. Big thanks to the crowd for the support on the day. The ladder sees the Stingers move up to 3rd spot on percentage, one game behind 2nd placed Diamond Creek. Next week the Stingers take on the Diamond Creek Devils at home in a must win game. One that could take them to second place.

2nd Nine vs Mitchell Majors - WON 30-3

3rd Nine vs Westgarth Won 12-8

Nth Balwyn vs Westgarth Won 12-8

Hits: 3: Paul C 2: Nick Chao Garry Shipp Tony Clapp John Symonds 1: Peter Clapp Barry Cranston Jerome Coles Andy Rose

RBI's 3: Paul C 2: Barry Cranston 1: Nick Chao Peter Clapp Andy Rose Tony Clapp John Symonds

We have won 5 games this season and this was by far the best or at least the most valuable. We have maintained our spot in the top 4 and with a tough run over the next 5 weeks this win against the 2nd top side was very important.
We got off to a good start with 2 runs in the first dig and 6 in the second, we took a grip on the game. Things slowed right down when the next 4 digs scored zero and Westgarth kept on scoring making the last dig very important for us to score. 2 hits 2 base on balls and 1 error to Westgarth saw North scoring 4 runs in the last to give us a 6 run lead enough to hold on for a win. The highlight for me this game was the batting of Tony Clapp and John Symonds. Batting at 8 and 9 both getting 2 hits each and their other 2 at bats making Westgarth having to make plays to get them out.
Peter Clapp started on the mound before Paul C relieved. A great come back from last week when 7 runs were scored in the first dig Peter only gave up 5 when relived in the sixth dig.
Welcome to Nick Chao, first game this season in the thirds and a Welcome back to Alan Shipp, a Nth Balwyn Life member's first game in 6 years.

4th Nine vs Westgarth Lost 12-5

5th Nine vs Knox -WON 15-7

The 5th had a solid start to their game against Knox, scoring early and played strongly in defence to take control of the game early. In the 2nd innings the Knox's starting pitcher began to lose his touch in hitting the strike zone, and the 5th took full advantage to score 11 runs from nine walks and three timely hits. Ben Wang pitched strongly through out the game, and picked up a well deserved win. Great hitting from our new player, Masa Sato who had two hits, 2 walks and 2 RBIs, also a special thanks to Matt St. Onge for coming down to help out this week, who also had 2 hits for the game. Let's keep up the good work 5th!!.

Under 17s vs Waverley at Napier Park Lost 2-7

U17s traveled to Waverley this week. Everyone played well through the whole game without losing concentration. Nobody seemed to have given up the game. That was a really good sign and huge difference from the previous games. Although we struggled against strike calls, all of us were aggressive enough to make contacts in the box. In almost every innings, we got on bases and made chances to score a run. Unfortunately, in defense, some errors and fielder’s choices cost more than a half of runs Waverley scored. Apart from this, everyone did a fantastic job in the field.

Under 15 vs Ringwood Lost 8-2

Little League vs Waverley Black

It isn’t always an easy task to take on the Waverley Baseball Club but the U13 boys had that challenge before them on Saturday morning at home to Waverley Black.

Justin started pitching, although carrying a slightly sore hand. The first innings saw 2 batters back in the dugout with strikeouts against their names, and one great fly taken by Jesse at third. Waverley Black managed to get 2 runs on the board but it was a good start for us. Our batting looked good with hits to Callum and Carey and walks to Mike, Steve, Justin and Jordan. We managed to get one run home with Steven crossing the plate on a steal. We finished the first innings with a respectable 2-1.

The second saw Justin striking out 2 batters before completing his 50 pitch limit. Only one hit (and run) was taken off our pitching before Callum came on and cleaned up by striking out the last batter. In the bottom of the 2nd Vivek led off, but fearing he couldn’t hit the excellent pitcher from Waverley. With a hint of self belief he stood up and smacked the first pitch through third for a one base bit. With a couple of steals he then reached home, our only run for the innings. We were then down 3-2.

Waverley Black came into the third with much confidence, however Callum was in good form and our fielders were on their toes. Callum took a ground ball and put the runner out at first. One batter hit the ball to Jordan who made a simple throw for the forced out at second - straight from the text book. The last batter was struck out leaving a runner on third and no runs scored. This left us going into the bottom of the third down by 3-2.

It is always great to get a hit and runs against Waverley - even better when most of the team do it. Following a walk to Brett, there were hits to Carey, Steven, Callum (2bh), Justin, Angus, Vivek and Rohit. This was simply batting magic and the innings was closed on the seven run rule. North Balwyn had won convincingly.

I would like to thank Mike Slape and Mark Scheffer for their assistance with batting practice in recent weeks - it is clear that the boys have been listening and their batting performance on Saturday proved they are a greatly improving batting team. Seriously well done boys.

The encouragement award went to Vivek for a sensational single base hit to third when he didn’t think he could hit the Waverley pitcher. Final score 5-3 win to North Balwyn who remain unbeaten to date sitting on 4 wins plus a draw (plus a forfeit and a washout). Great effort boys and a memorable win!

I would also like to acknowledge and thank the Waverley parents who helped set up the diamond for us.
