UMPIRES

The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Umpires are no exception and we need players to umpire home games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink after your game as a thank-you. Same for scoring.

In order to be fair to everyone, the club will be producing an umpire roster. When it is your turn if you are unable to make it, you will need to find replacement.

1st Nine vs La Trobe Uni - Lost 7-5

The top of the table clash has seen Latrobe Uni come out ahead after a tight game at Mytle Park on Saturday. Both teams started well with the lead changing hands throughout the day. Sam Taylor started on the mound for the Stingers and did a fantastic job in his first start for the season. David Keyhoe relieved well and the game was closed out by Yoshi. All pitchers did their job on the mound but were not backed up in the field as they had been in previous weeks. In the batting box, at times the Stingers failed to fire and as a result fell just short of top spot. Needing 4 runs going into the last scoring 2 with bases loaded there was a chance to win but it could not be taken. Heading into the all start break sees the 1sts in 4th spot a game clear of 5th and a game behind 2nd and 3rd. The loss to Latrobe Uni means we are now two games from top spot. After the break the Stingers look to cement their spot in the 4 when they host the Mitchell Majors. Training continues Thursday and for those not going away there is a senior training session on Saturday at 10am to 12pm.

2nd Nine vs Latrobe Uni - Lost 5-4

No report received.

3rd Nine vs Croydon - Lost 15-7

Hits: 2: Barry Cranston, Paul Conheady 1:Harley Scheffer, Tom Dundon, Garry Shipp, John Symonds, Tony Clapp
RBIs: 2: Barry Cranston John Symonds Paul Conheady 1:Tony Clapp

Not the greatest day in the world, but not the worst effort either. We got off to a shaky start with a quick at bat then a long field. Peter Clapp started on the mound, and they just seemed to take to him. By the time they had gone round the order they had scored 7 and only had one down. Paul C came onto the mound and managed to finish the dig, score being 0-7. We then managed to claw ourselves back into the game as final score shows we outscored them scored 7-6 in the next 4 innings, with Croydon trying to drag out every second in the last so we couldn't get another bat in.
To their credit Croydon did hit the ball all day 19-9 hits, with enough lucky drop ins to the help make the difference. We fielded well Tony Clapp at short stop John Symonds at 3rd changing Barry Cranston to 2nd all did a good job.

4th Nine vs Panton Hill - Lost 2-16

We started well this week with the first 3 innings very tight. However a few errors in the fourth and fifth innings coupled with some freakishly lucky hits from the opposition allowed them to get away. However everyone played well dispite this and all had a good time. Hits however were only with Jason Povey with 2 singles and Paul Baker with a single and a double.

5th Nine vs Wheelers Hill - Lost 3-27

Playing at home on the outer diamond against Wheelers Hill, who have scored on average 15 runs a game this season was to be a tough task, but the 5th team was able to keep the score close during the start of the game. However, the recent poor performance in the field once again proved costly, as Wheelers Hill was piling on the runs freely, which is not helped by the short left and right field, with three home runs coming from the opponents. Lack of match experience and communication amongst the players were the keys in under performing in this game, hopefully the 5th can bounce back after the break, and get back to the winner's list.

Under 17s vs Diamond Creek Lost 7-19

U17s hosted Diamond Creek this week.

Against a strong offensive team, Diamond Creek, North Balwyn did a great job to keep the game nice and tight. Everyone again executed in the batter box and even on the base to reach an extra base.

However, again, we lost concentration in the second half of the game that cost the game and brought another similar score to previous games.

We don’t even play for 2 hours every time, so let’s keep focusing until the game is over.

Under 15 vs Knox Lost 7-4

We were rained out against Waverley, but good news everyone was there and keen to go.
The next round was cancelled due to the provincial carnival, The carnival gives our boys the chance to play with and against others in a very concentrated environment. In reality they get about 15 at bats in 2 days which is equal to half of a normal season.
Two of our boys were selected Jack Scheffer and David Slape, both were a credit to North Balwyn and the entire Ringwood League team played and conducted themselves outstandingly. Our competition was in second division which we won easily only losing to the two first division teams who played the grand final.

I can report Ringwood League is now a first division league by winning second division.

Jack didn't get as much pitching as we would have liked however he was on fire fielding in both outfield and first base.
David just kept hitting the ball and scoring runners and really got the score ticking over .

The Sale location though very cold turned it on every day for clear sunny skies.
I have some other rep trials and pre trials later in this report.
To the boys who didnt try out, going to trials putting it on the line and being selected is a great personal achievement, and even if not selected it shows desire which in its self is a tremendous quality.
Now to last Saturdays game against Knox, Knox are the league leaders this year, and they got off to a flyer in the first inning, be that as it may from then on they were only just beyond being overtaken by our boys, Both teams shared errors and good plays.
Congratulation to Josh Barling returning from his arm injury who hit the hardest ground ball I have seen in a while the shortstop might still be in therapy and the center fielder was faced with the rocket as well, two runs scored from the hit and again when the boys can repeat what they have been taught in games its outstanding rewards for them and me.
On the same point Tom Gray caught a big fly at center field and never looked like missing as he was under it all the way two hands above his head and again all the practice perfectly executed.
The game also contained the funniest run off line I have ever seen Jamie avoiding a tag two or three times be running away from the baseline , I wonder if he was going around the backstop and sneak home from the other side , priceless Jamie.

We will be training this Wednesday night, and possibly over the weekend, I will have to sort that out by tomorrow. It would be great to get some day light training in and time to run a few game scenarios with the boys.

Thanks to Karen Rintoul for scoring and Rowan for his assistance.

Little League U12 vs Croydon

North Balwyn ventured out to the hills of Croydon to play a very young and inexperienced Croydon team. Given the obvious difference teams it was decided to allow Croydon to hit off the tee after three strikes - as done in U11. This also gave our boys an opportunity for some valuable fielding practice. The game gave us another chance to try out new playing positions and pitchers.

In the top of the first the clear difference between the teams showed strongly with the innings ending only after one out and North Balwyn hitting 7 runs. Walks went to seven batters with safe hits to Mike, Justin, Callum & Brett.
Jesse pitched the bottom of the first innings and did an excellent job, striking out several batters (who then hit off the tee). Brett put on the catcher’s mitt for the first time and did a sensational job.
The second innings continued in a similar vein, with the batting continuing as it was in the first. Safe hits were scored to Mike, Justin and Callum, with many batters getting walks. The innings closed out again with only one out and seven runs on the board.
Mike then took the pitchers mound for his first time pitching (in a full match that is). Mike was sensational and struck out most batters he pitched to, and also making an easy out at first. Three batters were struck out and even when hitting off the tee they were put out at first. Charlie had a go at catching and also did a great job of it.
The third innings saw only two outs and another six runs, when time was called. Unfortunately the top of the unfinished third innings doesn’t count in the score - the final official score being 14-1. A few lessons were learnt, in particular that the field need to make the plays and can’t just rely on the pitcher striking out batters. This will be invaluable when we face more experienced teams.

Encouragement award went to Jesse - for good disciplined throwing in his first pitching game and only his 4th game. Special mention goes to Mike who pitched very well, made outs in the field, scored 2 safe hits (and a walk) and showed great discipline in base running (holding up on a fly). Next match (after the long weekend) is Waverley B - the improvement in the North Balwyn team in the past few weeks should see us make a good match of this.
