UMPIRES
The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Umpires are no exception and we need players to umpire home games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink after your game as a thank-you. Same for scoring.
In order to be fair to everyone, the club will be producing an umpire roster. When it is your turn if you are unable to make it, you will need to find replacement.

1st Nine vs Reservoir - WON 6-1
In stark contrast to the previous Saturday this one was very nice and warm and sunny which made the trip over to Pentridge Prison all the more enjoyable. With Reservoir in 2nd spot prior to this game and the Stingers in 4th a game behind, it was a crucial game in the context of the season. Yoshi started on the mound and pitched an outstanding game, holding the Reservoir bats to only 2 hits for the day. Good defence from Reservoir threw out Matt Houlden trying to score from third in the top of the first and it remained locked at 0-0 until the 4th.
In the 4th and 5th, good team batting scored one run in each inning and solid defence by James at 3rd (3 assists) and Sam and Lenny (2 double plays) held Reservoir to nil.
In the 7th, a string of two out hits scored 4 runs to effectively put the game beyond doubt. Despite a run in the last to Reservoir, it wasn't enough as the Stingers moved to second on the ladder. Next week sees a top of the table clash back at Myrtle Park against Latrobe University.
Hits: 2 Tim O'Meara, Matt Houlden, 1 Nick Dundon, Yoshi Hanami, Sam Taylor
RBIs: 3 Tim O'Meara, 1 Yoshi Hanami, Matt Houlden, James Roy
Pitching: Yoshi 7In, 2H, 4BB, 1K, 1 Earned Run.
2nd Nine vs Reservoir - WON 7-4
A “blue collar” win today as we manufactured a few runs by moving the runners and sacrificing to bring in the bacon, well done to Speedy and Cameron. The start was a bit tough as some of the young guns arrived late because of participating in the junior games, thanks to Sam for sub fielding the first dig. A grind it out type of day on the mound for Alex going 4 innings giving up 1 earned run on 1 hit with 8 walks, one hit batter and 5 strike outs, well done for persisting through the day. A good relief effort to Speedy coming in to close out the game. It was good to see the defence come up with the plays when needed as we could have easily given up more runs but we got tough in clutch situations stranding 6 runners, well done to Matt and Nick for coming up with some good plays. Another good effort by Jack behind the dish. Welcome to Stephen Redfern on his debut with the Stingers seconds who did a great job with the bat and had a good defensive day as well. Congratulations to Alex for his offensive effort with a 2 for 3 day, a walk, and an inside the park home run. A very good team win as everyone had a hand in this one.
It is now time to focus on the next challenge at home vs. LaTrobe Uni this week to avenge our draw to open the season.

3rd Nine vs Research - WON 13-7
Hits 3: Garry Shipp 2: Andy Rose Harley Scheffer 1: Jerome Coles Peter Clapp Paul Conheady Tony Clapp
Rbi's 4: Andy Rose 2: Harley Scheffer Garry Shipp 1: Jerome Coles Tony Clapp
It was always going to be a day where the game was won in the batting box. We had 11 hits and Research had 10 yet we had 10 Base on Balls to nil though the 9 runners left on base for us meant we needed to hit when it counted. In the 4th dig scores were 4 all bases loaded and 2 out, we went on to score 7 runs, we had 8 of the base on balls and 6 hits. Well done to all. This keeps us in a very competitive position fighting for 3rd spot or 2nd spot depending on whether you think percentage is important or not. See you next week.
4th Nine vs Ringwood - Lost 6-14
Playing the top team can be a daunting task, but the 4ths were up to the challenge with one of their best outings to date. Improvements in every aspect of the game could be seen all game. Solid fielding and improved batting ensured a great day. Steven Brogan led the way with 10 plays at 3rd and backed it up with 3 hits. Steve Deakes had a good day for his first go at 1st base including a great pass to the pitcher covering 1st. Andy Milne continues to improve behind the plate. Hits: Steven Brogan 3 (singles), Tim Miller 2 (Singles), Paul Baker 2 (a single and double), Jason Povey 1 (single) and Glenis Keays 1 (single). Thanks to Andy Rose who umpired his 1st game. A special thank you to the Ringwood team; their fair play and courtesy on and off the field made for a great day.

5th Nine vs Northcote - Draw 12-12
The 5th team had a good start against Ringwood on Saturday, scoring early runs and limiting the opponents' scoring chances. However Ringwood took the lead through several hits and fielding errors from the 5th and was in control mid way through the game. But a never give up attitude from the team reduced the margin to one run, and some timely hitting and good running between the bases saw the 5th took over the lead in the last inning, unfortunately fielding errors occurred again, which allowed Ringwood to even the score, eventually the game was a draw. Hopefully next time we will be able to win the close games, and keep working on our fieldings!
Under 17s vs Knox at Gilbert Park - Lost 6-16
U17s visited Knox this week.
As the score shows, everyone
played hard and well till the top of 3rd inning. Finally
we executed our offense and scared the opponent to force the ace pitcher
to come in.
In the second half of the game,
however, we lost focus and gave up too many runs to catch up.
It was very disappointing that
we seemed to have given up the game even though we were leading the
game and played our game.

Under 15s - BYE
Little League 12&U vs Combined Ringwood/Forest Hill WON 5-3
Following on from the washout on the previous week the U-13 Stingers played a combined Ringwood - Forest Hill team again, this time at Ringwood. The previous match against Ringwood/Forest Hill was a little one sided so it was a good opportunity for some of our young team to have a go at some new positions.
The top of the first innings saw some excellent batting with safe hits to Jesse and Justin. Jason and Mike both received bases on balls while Carey wore one to take his base. Jordan, running for Jesse (sore ankle) crossed the home plate as did Justin and Jason to complete the innings with three runs. The bottom of the first saw a new Battery operating with Steve pitching to Jason. Stephen closed the innings out with only 2 batters getting on base and one run on the board.
The second innings was led off by Callum who followed up a hit with good stealing to find his way home. Jordon took to the pitching mound for the bottom of the second and struck out two batters while two runs were posted by Ringwood/Forest Hill.
The third innings was lead off by Stephen who was walked and found his way to home. No other runs were scored. This left the Stingers going into the bottom of the third up by 2 runs but feeling a little nervous; given the Ringwood/Forest Hill kids had scored 2 runs in the second. In a clever tactical move Justin was brought onto the pitching mound to try to steady the game.
Justin did this exceptionally well - Ringwood/Forest Hill batted three up - three down. It took just 11 pitches to close the innings and win the game for North Balwyn. A sensational effort!
The encouragement award went to Jason for his efforts in catching for the first time. Final score 5-3 win to North Balwyn who remain unbeaten to date sitting on 2 wins plus a draw (plus a forfeit and a washout). Great effort boys.

Damlow Nomination

Continuing on a similar theme as last week, this week's nomination sent in by an ex Boston resident sees super coach Dave Keyhoe dressed in a Boston hat with a Yankees top at training last week.
For those not up with the goings on of the MLB, it is equivalent to someone wearing a Collingwood scarf and a Carlton playing top! |
