Congratulations
Congratulations must go to Jack Scheffer and David Slape who were selected in the Ringwood District Under 14 Representative team. The boys will take on the best from the state in the Under 14 provincial carnival in Sale on the 24th and 25th of May.
1st Nine vs Diamond Creek - Lost 12-2
Report not submitted.
2nd Nine vs Diamond Creek - WON 14-5
Our 2nds got off to a good start with 3 in the first innings against some pretty solid pitching. New recruits Matt Mulcahy and Cameron Taylor were thrown in at the deep end and played solid games including 2 safe hits and an RBI for Matt. Sam Taylor started on the mound at late notice and threw plenty of strikes holding Diamond Creek to 0 in the first and 1 in the second. The highlight of the game came in the 3rd. when Sam replied in the best way possible to a questionable inside pitch and hit the next one for a home run over the trees at right field.
Diamond Creek hit back in the bottom 3rd and scored 4 to take the lead. We held our nerve and brought Alex Canney in to finish the game, Alex shut them down for 2 innings by throwing hard strikes and not allowing anyone easy access to the bases. We scored 10 in the 5th due to some excellent hitting and aggressive base running that put too much pressure on the Diamond Creek defence. Special mentions to Jack Rintoul, who did a great job behind the plate and also had 2 hits for 3 RBI’s, and James Roy who had 2 hits and an RBI, good to have him back.
Importantly, some more disciplined hitting should have seen us score 3 or 4 more runs by sacrificing our time at bat to score a runner from 3rd. base. Its all about hitting the ball, not how hard you hit it, with runners on 3rd.
It is now time to focus on the next challenge at home vs. Bundoora this week who usually hit the ball fairly well.
Hits: Sam -4; Jack, James & Matt M. -2; Alex & Matt S. –1,
RBIs: Sam & Jack –3; Alex, Matt M., Chao, James & Matt S. –1

3rd Nine vs Knox - WON 7-6
Hits 2 Barry Cranston Paul Conheady 1 Stephen Redfern, Peter Clapp, Garry Shipp, Mike Slape,
RBIs 2 Garry Shipp, Barry Cranston, Paul Conheady 1 Mike Slape
A couple of weeks ago I was saying how well we batted this week was a different story we came back from 4-6 down to win. There were 9 Base on ball, 9 LOB, only 8 Hits and 7 Runs. The pitching this week was no better than previously seen, so 14 from 18 outs in the infield, supports the fact we just did not hit the ball as well. I know the base on balls is a good at bat, but it is only good if the batters behind move them around and score them.
Our fielding also needs a little improvement. Although the error rate was down that was because we failed to get to the ball and chance making a mistake. We need to be more aggressive, attack the ball and try and knock it down, be prepared to put our bodies on the line.
Above all I want to hear more talking. Let everyone know when a runner is stealing and above all when a player makes a good play I want to hear the support, congratulate him on a good fly or pick up and throw. Lets use our voices and be a team, we were far too flat on Saturday.
On the positive side we did have a win which continues good results this season. After 4 digs on the mound Paul relieved Peter and Peter went to second base to have a great last dig being involved in all three outs. Barry came through with a very timely hit to right field to score the winning run.
Highlight of the day was the unveiling of the 3rds premiership flag from 2007.
4th Nine vs La Trobe - Lost 3-23
A game where the final score didnt really match the game, however once again experience was the real difference between the teams, with La Trobe hitting away in the last scoring 13 runs. Thanks to Randal Vavra who played with us passing on his knowledge of the game, and hitting a 2 run homer. Pitching off the flat was didnt make things easy for our pitchers, however they did a good job dispite this. Hits to Steve Brogan (2 Singles), Mal Fawcett (1 single), Andy Milne (1 double), Steve Deakes (1 double) and the Home Run by Randal.

5th Nine vs Northcote - Lost 4-17
Matt Wang started strongly on the mound for the 5th against Northcote on Saturday, however, several simple fielding errors were commited resulting in Northcote scoring numerous un-earned runs in the first inning. The 5th did not bat very well either, having only 4 hits through out the match. More work is need defensively, and hopefully the players can ease off their neverousness during the game as the season goes on. Let's hope for a much improved outing this week.
Under 17s vs Research - Lost 1-8
U17s traveled to Lower Plenty to match-up against Research this week. With keeping the Research line up within very few runs, U17s started the game well in control.
Despite spending a lot of pitches, Harley was superb on the mound and pitched for 2 1/3 innings before well relieved by Tom, who also did a great job with minimum run given up. Tim showed great effort starting behind the plate and again did a fantastic job, even though he hurt his left thumb during catching.
The guys behind the pitchers again well backed up and execute their awesome defense. In first inning, Corey McGeary, who played the very first game for North Balwyn, picked up a tough ground ball at third, which could be a RBI single for Research, and beautifully played to first. Steve, who was very solid at first base, caught a hard line drive and completed a double play throwing to Tom on the second base in second inning. In third inning, running catch to a tough line drive by Seb in center field made again double play completing on the second base as a runner couldn’t come back. Corey McLaughlin, who came in first base after Steve, also made a nice play to a ground ball while Billy in second caught a ground ball and nicely played to first.
In offense, however, we couldn’t execute what we have as a pitcher for Research was too good and was handling fastball and slider very well. With a couple of runners on scoring position in second and third inning, although everyone had nice swings, we couldn’t have a hit to bring a run in both chances. A lone hit by Steve in the last inning finally led a run.
Overall, the game was absolutely fantastic, especially defensively.
One big difference we can see between an opponent and us is mental strength. They are not afraid of making mistakes whereas we seem scared of making mistakes. Let’s get more aggressive in the field, make more mistakes and, most importantly, learn from the mistakes!!!!!

Match Report, U17s at Proclamation Park on 03/05/08 (apologies to Yoshi, who submitted this on time last week. Even the newsletter editor needs to learn from mistakes!)
Lost, North Balwyn 2 – 14 Ringwood
U17s visited Ringwood this week. Although we had only 8 players, everyone played much better than the last week.
Tim started behind the plate for the very first time and was outstanding keeping the ball in front of him. Steven, who looked comfortable on the mound caught by Tim, kept Ringwood line-up with minimum runs for 2 innings. Corey came in on the mound in the second half of the game and did a superb job, caught by Harley, who also gave us a strong defense. The pitchers were well backed up by some fantastic plays. Graeme caught a tough foul fly in first and Billy in second made great plays to a ground ball and a fly ball. Seb in center field also caught two tough pop-ups while Tom handled a tough ground ball and played to the first.
Not only in defense but also in offense, everyone did a fantastic job. Corey had two hits while Tom, and Steven had a hit each. Billy, Harley, Seb, and Tim also got on the base by walks and a hit-by-pitch. Even though Graeme didn’t get on the base, he did a great job in a box swinging and being aggressive to each pitch.
Although we have still got a plenty to improve, all of you are absolutely getting improved every single week. Great job guys!!

Under 15s vs Waverley Black- Won 9-4
Well there we have it, our first win well done boys.
What does it take to win? Firstly a team effort and at last we had it. Not a team of individuals, but a team all contributing .
Jack opened and dominated on the pitchers plate the opposition threw twice as many pitches as ours and the score was about the same 9 to 5
Jess closed this week and did just that, with a win on the table all the boys stood tall and took it.
Next week we play Waverly top team and if anything that can be dramatically improved from last week to this game is simply get a full nights sleep on Fridays , really guys I want your best but more importantly I want you to want to give your best, for your self your team and the club.
Simon did his disciplined job as umpire many thanks, its not a throw away line discipline in the batters box is important and when the umpires all over the place the boys struggle to stay focused on hitting strikes, worrying what the next call will be. Thats why I'm happy to have Simon around.
As a piece of standing advice, from right field, don't throw to first from left.
Our scoring support was still strong and please, if you haven't already, get in the scorers box and see it happen and have a go, with support.
I hope Josh has had good news with his plastered arm , as he is part of our team and we need all the boys on deck to learn and support each other.
We play at Waverley this week be there fresh and eager to go at 8 shoes gloves and shirts tucked in.
Little League 12&U vs Combined Ringwood/Forest Hill WON 16-1
Following on from the forfeit on the previous week (thanks Croydon) the U-13 Stingers played a combined Ringwood - Forest Hill team at Myrtle Park.
The game turned out to be a run fest against the less experienced Ringwood/Forest Hill kids and powerful hitting by North Balwyn left the opposition with little chance of winning. Strong hitting from Justin (3 hits), Carey (2 hits & a walk), Callum (2 hits), Jordan and Jesse (1 hit each) and several walked batters saw North Balwyn clock up a score of 16 runs to Ringwood/Forest Hill’s 1. Carey, Brett & Justin crossed the home plate to score three times.
In the field North Balwyn fielded well with Jesse fielding at first fielding well and making an out. Another runner was put out by Callum at home base thus preventing the run. Pitching duties were shared between Callum (4 strike outs) and first time pitcher, Jordan (1 strike out).
The encouragement award went to Brett for his efforts in base running. Brett, who was walked three times, stole 6 bases. Brett actually crossed home plate four times, with the umpire sending him back once as the ball was called out of play. 16-1 win to North Balwyn. Great effort boys.
