1st Nine vs Reservoir - WON 8-0
The firsts have hit back solidly after last week's poor performance with a solid win over last years runners up, Reservoir. With our starting shortstop from last week a late withdrawl Mr. Anderson got the call up and didn't disappoint with 2 hits. Hits were also a plenty up and down the order with virtually everyone recording something in the H column. Yoshi was outstanding on the beautifully prepared mound with a complete game shutout as well as picking up 3 hits. This week the firsts have the road trip and will travel to Broadford to take on the competition debutantes the Mitchell Majors in a very important game.
Car Pool to Broadford
For this week David Keyhoe has offered a lift to Broadford in his immaculate tractor so if you are interested please book a spot at training. At last count there were four remaining. Be at the home ground 12:15pm and the bus leaves shortly after.
2nd Nine vs Reservoir - Drew 5-5
A good debut performance this year by Nick Dundon who went 5 2/3 innings giving up 5 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits with 5 walks, 1 hit batsmen and 2 strikeouts. A good start offensively as we scored 2 runs in the first dig and then went on to score one run each inning 3 out of the next 5 innings. Great job by Jack behind the plate again. We did not hit as well as we should have this week against a pitcher that doesn’t have all that much tough stuff to hit. We left several (5) on base and did not capitalise as we should have; so this will be something we need to work on in future. We need to advance the runners to second and third to get them home sometimes referred to as small ball. I do believe we have one of the best defences in the league once we get going and with the young arms getting in to gear should see us near the top of the ladder

3rd Nine vs Panton Hill - Lost 10-12
3 hits Paul C Peter Clapp; 2 hits Garry Shipp, Mike Slape; 1 Hit Jerome Coles, David Cranston, Stephen Redfern, Tony Clapp
It was a loss this week but very pleasing the way we played. Panton hills coming down from A grade last season do not have their same pitchers, but they still hit the ball very well. As did we this week. Welcome to Stephen Refern for his first game in the 3's 37 plate appearences 1 K and 3 base on balls, so we either hit the ball and got on base or hit the ball to make the opposition have to make the play to get us out.
Peter Clapp started on the mound and pitched into the 5th innings including 3 hits completed a very good day. Paul C had a good welcome back for for first game of the season. First pitch was a nice fat one which was hit for a home run. Paul later came onto the mound to replace Peter, Stephen Redfern relieved as the catcher and called a very good zone. Jerome lead off the batting this week and playing left field taking a couple of wonderful fly balls.
One or two miss fields on a rough bouncing ground and a couple of wild throws may or may not have made the difference but otherwise a reasonable pleasing day.
4th Nine vs Panton Hill - Lost 0-20
Not so good for us this week. We faced a team made up of players from thier 1sts (4), seconds (3) and 3 beginers, including a regular 1sts pitcher. Whilst fielding the ball was generally good, poor throws lets us down. On the brighter side, we welcomed newcomer Steven Brogan who fielded well and also pitched well in the latter part of the game. Hits to Steve Deakes and Andy Milne. Final score, 20-0....most of which were unearned.
5th Nine vs Waverley - WON 16-8
Second game of the season, the 5th were away to Waverley. Matt Wang started on the mound, and the 5ths scored 3 runs in each of the first two innings. Great batting and running between the bases saw the 5th took a 14:2 lead after the 3rd inning, however Matt began to find it hard to hit the strike zone, allowing 6 runs from 3 hits and 3 walks. Ben Wang took over and stopped Waverley from scoring, in the end the 5tsh won 16:8. Two wins in a row, a great effort all around, well done 5th! Thanks again to Seb and Billy for coming to help out the team, hoped they enjoyed playing with us. Hits: 4-Adam; 2-Kena, Frank; 1-Will H., Will C., Seb, Matt RBIs: 5-Adam; 2-Will H.; 1-Kena, Frank, Will C., Seb, Matt
Under 17s vs Doncaster - Lost 0-21
U17s hosted Doncaster at Myrtle Park to begin 2008 season. For all of us, it was the very first time to experience what U17s’ competition is like. Once the game started, Doncaster was good enough to make us learn what U17s’ competition is going to be like. The score tells….yes, it is going to be a enormously hard season for North Balwyn U17s.
Tom, Harley and Jerome faced Doncaster line-up. Despite hard work by our pitchers, Doncaster was too good and kept hitting through the game. Steven and Graeme did a hard job behind the plate and both caught a foul pop-up each. In the second base, Tim beautifully caught a ground ball and played to first while Seb nicely caught a pop-up. As Doncaster kept smashing, Billy worked hard and chased all the balls in the left field. Everyone worked very hard and made some nice plays.
We were, however, very quiet in the box. The opponent pitcher was very solid and we struggled to hit even to the front. A lone hit by Tom in the last inning saved us from no hitter game.
Yes, it is hard to improve our hitting and fielding in a short period, but what we can do right now is “Let’s not get down whatever score is. Let’s not give up until the game is over. Let’s work hard and keep moving forward.”

Under 15s vs Ringwood- Lost 4-12
Jesse Rintoul started on the mound this week and was well relieved by Jack Scheffer in his first start for the Stingers. Sporting a number of players from Blackburn/Waverley GF team from the summer this was always going to be a tough game and with less than perfect backup for the pitchers it only made things harder. Plenty to work on for next time these teams meet.
Little League 12&U vs Knox - Drew 3-3
The boys started well with Callum followed by Carey scoring hits in the first innings and North Balwyn scoring one run. With some great pitching from Justin, Knox took only one hit and saw three of their batters struck out. This left the score at 1-nil at the bottom of the first and things looked good for the Stingers.
North Balwyn followed up with some strong batting with further hits to Callum & Carey, hits to Justin, Viv, and Mike and two more runs. Knox responded with several hits, managing runs in the second and third innings, to finish the third with the score 3-2..
In the top of the fourth innings a hit by Brett got him on base however the boys couldn't get another run home. They went into the bottom of the fourth leading Knox 3-2 and setting the game up for an exciting finish.
In the bottom of the fourth two hits and the equalising run were scored by Knox. Relief pitcher Callum managed to strike out two batters before finally with two down, and a runner on base, an excellent fly was taken by Rohit at left field to close out the game - final score a very exciting 3-3 draw.
Most impressive with the batting performance was the number of boys (in particular first gamers) who showed very good discipline in choosing which pitches they would swing at and leaving the balls. In the field Callum (2 strike outs) and Justin (4 strikeouts) pitched well and also took a fly ball each. Carey did an excellent job in his first game with two hits and fielding well at first.
Overall, everyone, especially the first gamers, put in a very respectable effort and the season looks very promising for this young team.
