UPMIRES

The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Umpires are no exception and we need players to umpire home games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink after your game as a thank-you. Same for scoring.

In order to be fair to everyone, the club will be producing an umpire roster. When it is your turn if you are unable to make it, you will need to find replacement.

1st Nine vs Latrobe Uni - Lost 2-4

A disappointing start to the season for the First Nine with a narrow loss to Latrobe Uni at Latrobe on the weekend. Yoshi started on the mound and did a good job in holding the Latrobe lineup to very few runs. However it was the offence this week that could not get the job done to back him up. There were runners in scoring position a number of times but these opportunities were not able to be capitilised on. Plenty of work to do this week at training before taking on last years runners up Reservoir at Myrtle Park.

2nd Nine vs Latrobe Uni - Drew 6-6

A good effort this week for the opening game of the 2008 2nds season. A gutsy performance by Alex who maxed out his 100 pitch count in the 5th inning going 4 2/3 innings giving up 6 runs (1 earned) on 1 hit with 4 walks, 5 hit batsmen and 7 strikeouts. I’m sure we will see much more of this young man as he comes in to form to find the strike zone on a more consistent basis. A tough start out of the gate by our defence as we weathered the first inning with 3 errors giving the opposition 4 unearned runs. After the first dig we came together and played an errorless match. Great job by Jack behind the plate, and Harley took a couple of good catches out in left field as well. Matt had a solid game at second snaring one up the middle with bases loaded to save the go ahead run by LaTrobe. A couple of base running mistakes coupled with the errors took this game out of our hands as we should have easily beaten this team on the day. Early season jitters now gone we should be a strong force to reckon with this year.

Hits – Chao – 2, John– 2, Alex, Nick C., Nick D., Matt, & Jack – 1
RBIs – Matt,– 2, Alex, John & Jack 1.

3rd Nine vs Waverley - WON 13-12

Waverley Wildcats:      611 31  = 12
North Balwyn Stingers:012 91  = 13

Rocked up to Myrtle Park for the first game of the season as reigning premiers - against Waverley. With a bare 9 and our capt / coach on other duties, we had to pull together very quickly - it took a while - but we made it.

Mike Slape took to the mound first off, struggled with location and a productive dig for the opposition produced 6 runs. Clappy relieved, but the Wildcats  continued to score; moving to an 11-3 advantage. Although we batted strongly right from the word go, nothing fell into place until the 4th. We then got well on top of the pitching and scored 9 runs to take a one run lead.

Waverley fought back in the last when their lead-off got on base and the resultant play allowed him to scamper to third..... ugly!!. The next hitter smacked a double to equalise, and of course put the go a head run in scoring position. The defence then showed fantastic resolve and worked the three outs without giving up another run.

We had the right of reply and all the computations were flying around the dugout as we best discussed a strategy to score...  bunt, bunt bunt was flying everywhere. Tony lead off with a walk, which brought Jerome to the plate. Having confused him completely with all the 'bunt' talk - the coaching group decided to flick the bunt altogether and just go with the flow. As it turned out, a timely wild pitch sent Tone to second, negating the need to bunt in any case - and first gamer Jerome smacked the next pitch deep into centre/left to score a game winning RBI.

A special welcome to new gamers  - Jerome Coles and Mike Slape.

Hits: 3: Andy Rose, Dave & Barry Cranston; 2: Paul Shipp (incl a 3 run triple), Mike Slape, Jerome Coles; 1: Garry Shipp (+ a sac fly), Peter Clapp
Plays of the day:  Tony and Dave turned a great double play - and Jerome's game winning RBI.

4th Nine vs Watsonia - Lost 11-14

Dispite a loss to begin the season, a very well played game by all. Mall Fawcett pitched well, Jason Povey hit a nice stand up double and play of the day came from Jon Symons who took a diving catch and followed up stranding a runner for a neat double play. Steve Redfern caught a great game as well in his first senior game for North Balwyn. Final score; 14-11. A good start to the season with plenty to build on for next week.

5th Nine vs Watsonia - WON 11-6

Playing at home against Watsonia, the 5th team did not have an ideal start, giving up five runs in the first inning. However, as the match went on, good pitching from Ben Wang and good fielding kept the visitors from scoring again.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Stingers scored seven runs to turn the game around from four hits and four walks, the team also scored a further four runs to win the game 11:6.

It was an all round great effort by the team, with Ben picking up the win, and Matt Wang taking the save.

A special mention goes to first-gamer Sue Smith, who had one hit and reached on base twice. Thanks must also go to Seb and Billy for coming down and fill in for the team.
