Sports clubs such as ours play a significant role in the community and therefore have a responsibility to our members and their families. in recognition of this, the North Balwyn Baseball Club has elected to participate in the Australian Drug Foundation's Good Sports program.
The program is run in Victoria by Good Sports in conjunction with the Australian Drug Foundation, TAC, Vic Health and the Alcohol Education Rehabilitation Foundation. The program has been designed to assist clubs with the responsible management of alcohol and is the only nationwide program of its kind.
As a community based club we believe involvement in this program is a way for our club to promote a healthy and welcoming club culture whilst working to consistently meet our duty of care obligations in regards to alcohol consumption.
To become Good Sports Level 1 accredited we will address a number of criteria including having members trained in the Responsible Serving of Alcohol.
For more information about the Good Sports program contact Matthew Houlden (northbalwynbc@yahoo.com).

What a fantastic way to finish a season and especially as we have celebrated a mile stone in the club with our 70th birthday. It has been 17 long years since our club has tasted the sweetness of a Grand Final win, one we richly deserved as we were the better team on the day. We had 20 hits in total with Garry Ship leading the way with 5 hits for 5 at bats. Our fielding was outstanding with not a single error recorded and with everyone having at least 2 or more plays against their name to get an out. Peter Clapp started on the mound pitching 5 from 7 innings an outstanding job against C grades leading hitting side. Paul Ship came onto the mound at the start of the 6th after doing the bulk of the pitching up to that stage during the previous 2 finals Paul shut them out in the last two innings leaving us with a well deserved win. The most pleasing thing of the day was well played like team, everyone doing their bit whether it be on the filed, in the batters box or blokes like Michael Huang in the team for all the final helping as the first base coach and helping warm up the outfield each innings.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the people who came along to support us on the day, all the players who played with the 3rd this season, the blokes who umpired us this year, Cheryl Lynch our scorer and to the blokes in the finals side. We did it!

If I had to describe the outcome in one word, exciting, would be that word. Bottom of the 5th and we were 7 runs to 1. By the end of the 7th normal time and game it was tied at 8 all and an extra innings was to be played. Paul Shipp started on the mound and did a fantastic job. The start of the game showed very good pitching, good batting and good fielding. Whilst we finished the game with good batting there was a small hurdle in the middle where 4 innings netted only 2 runs, a couple more runs could have really buried them. Late in the game though we let ourselves down in the field with a number of basic errors. We need to get behind the ball glove on the ground, and we need to talk in the outfield let each other know where the ball is as the sun makes it hard to see in the afternoon. Having said that it is always nice to beat Knox some good hitting by Paul Shipp to lead the way a nice triple by Andy to score a run and a triple by Peter Clapp to score 3 runs at a critical time in the match were a couple of stand outs. There was some good bunts laid down and in general very good aggressive base running. Everyone contributed at some part of the game and it was good to see people from the club come to watch and support thank-you for that.
Now we can go into the Grand Final next week beating Westgarth showing them what an improved side we are.
