UPMIRES
The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Referees are no exception and we need players to umpire for local games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink.
In order to be fair to everyone, the club has produced a draft umpire roster which is now version 2 given that some teams have swapped around. Please check it out and note when you are umpiring. You will need to find replacement if you cannot umpire your game. Replacement arrangements can be made with Jason Smith on 9421 2887 or 0432 547 222.

1st nine vs Bundoora - Won 9-3
RBI's: Houlden 2, Yoshi 2, Lenny, Billy - 1 each Hits: Houlden 2 (triple), Lenny, Billy, Speedy, Yoshi, Tim, Aaron and Carlos - 1 each
We have now played every team once and it feels we have some real momentum. We have 4 wins and 1 draw from our last 5 games but there is still much work to be done. We will face the top 3 teams in the next 3 weeks and find out where we truly are in the competition.
Pleasing to see our bats starting to do some talking, we have put together a solid line up and virtually hit well through 9 batters. We swapped the order around this week and Lenny and Billy showed what they are capable of, Lenny led off with a hit in the first, stole second, advanced on Billys ground ball then scored our first on a pass ball. He had a sac in his second at bat, scored a run and Billy hit a line drive to right field for a hit after him. Great to see these guys hitting the ball and getting a bit more time at the plate.
Matty Houlden had 2 hits and 2 RBI's and everyone else contributed well.
We had another rookie on the mound to start the game and Aaron threw 2 innings leaving Yoshi to close the last with 2 K's. Carlos was solid at third, Yoshi made some great plays at short and Lenny did a good job at second. Speedy called well from behind the plate then swapped with Billy later at right. We have moved players all around the field over the last few weeks and now find ourselves with a variety of options and real depth in the Club.
Positions on the team will be tight leading up to the finals, my advice - get to training and turn up to the game 1 hour minimum before it starts.
Thanks to John Anderson for sticking around and helping out and to Terry Keyhoe for umpiring both the 5ths. and 1sts. on Saturday.

2nd nine vs Bundoora - Won 12-7
Another good win by the 2s this week although we didn't close out real strong finishing with a 12-7 score and giving the Brumbies a chance during the last dig. We started out a bit shaky as we gave them an unearned run in the first inning. We came back in the bottom of the 1st to score 7 and followed on with 4 in the 2nd dig. James had another great day on the mound going 5 and 1/3rd innings giving up only 5 hits and 3 earned runs with 7 strike outs - well done James. Only one error on the day so a great defensive effort as well, I believe we have one of the best defensive units in the competition so we must play a bit more small ball in order to capitalize. We need to maintain our focus throughout the game if we are to win the flag this year as we face the tougher teams we will need to continue to hit the ball the way we did the first couple of innings in order to keep the pressure on. All in all a solid team win as everyone did their part during the entire match.
Hits – Chao, Francisco & James -2, Nick D., John, Sam & Randall - 1 RBIs – James &Randal l– 2, Nick D, Chao, John, Sam, & Francisco - 1

We play Waverly next week on their home ground so need to be prepared to take them on there. Standings as of the first 8 rounds find us in third place by two points and tied for second on points but nosed out by percentage.

3rd nine vs Research(4th) - Won 20-27
Hits   4 Paul C  3 Joey Yu,  David Boelle   2 Tony Clapp, Garry Shipp    1 Peter Clapp, Andy Rose RBI   9 Paul C  6 Joey Yu,  4 Gary Shipp  3 David Boelle  2 Michael Huang 1 David Cranston, Peter Clapp
Well it was certainly a high scoring game, as one of the Research blokes said you don't often score 20 runs and lose. We started off with a quick inning 3 up and 3 down. They started with a 7 run first dig and we though that it was going to be a tough day at the office. Peter Clapp started on the mound, I came in for the last innings, a few errors throughout the day in the infield made it slightly longer than it should have been though an injured Garry Shipp made the play of the day taking a diving, rolling very timely fly at right field to halt a run Research were building. The batting was our best part of the day. 19-16 up going into the last dig we scored 8 runs to put it beyond Research. Our last 2 outs were K's leaving 2 on base but in 27 runs there were only 5 left on base all day. Peter Clapp and Andy Rose were 1st and 3rd outs in 2 of the innings, not that we will continue to rub that in, but another excellent batting performance from Joey Yu as well 3 hits and a walk. Lastly it has taken me 19 years and after a couple of close efforts previously, Paul C hit the cycle which I didn't realise until I did the stats. For those that do not know, the cycle is within the one game, a home run, a triple, a double and a single and with 9 RBI's I had a bit of a day out.

4th nine vs La Trobe Uni - Lost 23-8
It was very experienced game for 4th players. We were 5 runs behind in the first inning and came back in the 2nd inning.  However, couple serious infield errors occurred in 3rd inning and allow Latrobe lead by 12 points. Try to catch up in the last inning and score another 3 runs but the damage was big and hard to recover.
Most of players batting performance were good today. Due to too many errors!
5th nine vs Forest Hill - Lost 19-9
We only had 8 players to take on the league leaders, however we gave them a scare halfway thru the game. Some good fielding and strong batting made for a competitive game. The final score of 19-9 didnt really tell the story as we hit back hard after a slow start with a 3 run homer from starting pitcher David Noden and a solo home run from Paul Baker.
The team would like to thank Forrest Hill's for the sub fielder and a good spirited game.
Hits include: 3 Run Home Run to David Noden, 2 single hits plus a solo home run to Paul Baker singles to Andrew Milne & James Wilkinson.
Under 15s vs Ringwood Redsox - Lost 4-5
As the score shows, it was a very close and good game. Corey started on the mound for his first starting pitch and did a great job for 3 innings giving up 2 runs only. Also, the fielders baked him up well as Seb and Jerome caught a big pop up fly each.
We hit very well again this week and produced 4 runs efficiently, 3 runs in the first inning and 1 run in the second inning. However, we were not able to get any runs in the second half of the game as we lacked aggressiveness in the batter box. Unfortunately, this cost us a winning game.
It was another lost though, we played very well and kept the game close and interesting. Good job guys!!!
Under 13s vs Forest Hill - Won 15-7
A sensational game this week and the first win of the season over a pretty evenly match team. Tim started on the flat and pitched very well going through three innings before his pitch count was up. Callum came in to relieve for an inning and got the job done well. On the offensive side it was a fantastic effort with most people getting a hit. The highlight was a near home run to Jesse bouncing only a metre short of the fence. Callum had a double and Mike had a sensational hit to right field.
It is very pleasing to see how much everyone has improved this season already. We are over half way in the season now so next time we come up against the teams we didn't do so well against it will be interesting to see how we go.
