UPMIRES

The club depends on the volunteer contribution of its players to ensure it maintains its basic operations. Referees are no exception and we need players to umpire for local games. There is no need to be a professional umpire basic knowledge of the game will suffice. In return, players get a chance to brush-up their umpiring skills and their knowledge of the game. You will also be eligible for a free hot dog and drink.

In order to be fair to everyone, the club has produced an umpire roster. Please check it out and note when you are umpiring. You will need to find replacement if you cannot umpire your game. Replacement arrangements can be made with Jason Smith on 9421 2887 or 0432 547 222.

Results

1st Nine vs Doncaster - WON 9-7

The firsts started very well this week against Doncaster with their starting pitcher struggling with control allowing North Balwyn to open up a six run lead. From there however we seemed to slack off and allowed Doncaster to creep back into the game. Aaron pitched quite well before Yoshi relieved to hold Doncaster at 7. In the last with scores tied hits to Matty and Yoshi allowed two additional runs to score which in the end proved to be the difference.

2nd Nine vs Footscray - WON 16-7

A solid win by the young guns this week showing the maturity of the side is strengthening downing Footscray 16-4. A strong performance by Sam on the mound going 4 innings, with 6 strike outs, 2 walks and 0 runs. Nick D. came in for some valuable experience in the last inning and did a good job, I'm sure we will be seeing much more from Nick in future. We hit the ball well all day accumulating 12 hits in all to Footscray's 3. We had a few mental errors on the base paths this week which didn't hurt us but in a close game it could be the difference so we need to be a bit more cautious. We also missed a few signals so we need to make sure we are focused on the situation to ensure we are acknowledging the play and executing properly. Alex did a great job behind the plate holding on to most everything Sam had to throw. Nick had a good game at short and James took a couple of good catches in the outfield.

3rd Nine vs Panton Hill - WON 9-0 (WO)

What an easy win! The game was over Thursday Night!

4th Nine vs Watsonia - WON 6-5

It was a great win 6-5 for 4ths as everyone was tried hard to catch up. Couple of infield errors happened in the early innings. Ned Franklin pitched very well in his first and unfortunately game for the club this year. Lets hope he comes back to Australia next season to study and he can play a few more.. There were no hits to Watsonia after 3 innings and this allowed our team members get chance to catch up and win in the end. Alan Wise’s sensational hit in last inning certainly is the spark and light up 4 th winning hope. Good judgment and run from Adam Wang for the winning score.

It was a good match!!!!

5th Nine vs Knox - Lost 18-7

No match report submitted

Under 15s vs Knox Falcons - Lost 19-7

It was a pretty tough game for U15 guys at Knox. We hit very well despite the freezing morning. Everyone had great eyes to watch and pick the pitches that gave us 5 walks. Also, Steve, Corey, Billy and Will had a fantastic hit each and brought us runs. We did a great job on the bases as well and took the next base at every opportunity. Eventually we managed to score 7 runs against the pretty tough team, Knox Falcons. Unfortunately, as our pitchers struggled to throw strikes, Knox guys did a better job in the hitting and scored runs more than we did.

We need more improvement in the fielding to grab a win, our hitting is looking very good though. So let’s be more serious in the trainings and get yourself improve more.

Under 13s vs Ringwood Redsox - Lost 12-7

The Under 13s took on the might of the Ringwood redsox this week and ended up going down 12- 7.  The game ended up pretty close however for the first few innings it was all Ringwood as their pitcher overpowered our hitters.  However, after he came out of the game it was a different story.  A fantastic hit to Tim Beanland and good pitching by Rahul in his first outing helped North Balwyn.  This week we take on Forest Hill at their ground (cnr Springvale and Burwood) in a pretty important game.

Damlow Nomination

This week the damlow nomination goes to Tim O'Meara for the phrase "watch your lips!".  Something that really came out of the blue one week and has kind of just stuck.  For those not familiar with this phrase, this is something uttered when the batter has to get out of the way of a high inside pitch.

The Damlow award is open to everyone in the club so if you have something silly, funny please send it in.
