Results

1st nine vs Bundoora - WON 12-2

RBI’s: Tim, Yoshi

Hits: Billy, Carlos, Yoshi (triple), Chris, Speedy, Francisco.

Great to get away with a win first up. North Balwyn looked sharp from the outset but the first 7 runs were unearned. The opposition pitching was erratic early. We “hustled” several runs, utilising our speed to run successful steals and hit-and-runs.

Yoshi pitched a full game, struck out 7 and allowed only 4 hits in total, he got stronger as the game progressed with the ball on a string. The infield backed him well both Carlos and Chris had flawless games. Matty H and Speedy ran down a couple of tough flies in the outfield.

Lenny, Nick and Vernon sat on the bench after the 2nds. and all got an opportunity late in the game.

Not much point really at looking at the ladder but here you go anyway.

2nd nine vs Bundoora - WON 8-3

A good game to start the season, with just a couple of defensive mistakes at times when it didn’t matter and good solid plays when it did matter, showing this young team has backbone. Chao made several good plays at second and had the first hit and rbi in the game.

A sterling performance by Aaron on the mound striking out 5 and walking only 2 with 2 hpbs in 4 1/3 innings, we are looking forward to many more games like this from him in future. Alex came in and relieved well in the last inning. Jack had a great game behind the plate blocking almost everything coming his way and hustled back to the fence with a perfect throw back to Alex to retire a runner attempting to get home on the passed ball.

A very disciplined offensive side saw the boys gathering 11 walks. Alex and Vern had 2 rbis each with clutch hits with men in scoring position. We had many more opportunities to score with runners on base and will need to capitalise on these situations in future in order to have a chance at the flag this year. Good game guys keep up the good work.

3rd nine vs Croydon - WON 17-0

Welcome to 2007

Very good win and the score does justice to the day. We hit the ball better, fielded better and pitched better. This was a pleasing result as we lost to Croydon twice last year by 1 run. Firstly I would like to welcome Andy Rose and Mark Filbey to the team and club as well as welcome back all the other players. Tristan Hsu started on the mound (Peter Clapp relief top 5th) and Tristan proved again you don't have to be able to blast it past a batter, being able to throw strikes is what it is about, and Tristan did. He also threw in a good spot forcing the position to hit ground balls which were fielded or making Croydon pop them up for fly balls.

Croydon Managed only 5 runners on base all day. The batting was the most pleasing thing we had 16 Hits for the day, Joey Yu 4, David Cranston 3 and Nick Chao 2 Base on balls and 2 hits his last one after rounding 3rd and heading home seeing an average throw to the plate making it all the way around. Also well done to Tom Dundon a hit to centre field for what I believe to be his first hit for the seniors. Big thanks to Henry for umpiring.

4th nine vs Doncaster - Lost 11-3

The 4ths started well with Sam Chan and Michael Huang both getting extra base hits to score 3 runs, followed up by an unassisted double play in the bottom half of the innings to hold Doncaster to 1. After the 4th it was close trailing only 4-3, but the 5th innings cost us where a few errors allowed 7 unearned runs to finish the game.

3 0 0 0 0     3 - Us
1 2 0 1 7    11 - Them

This is a pretty good start to the season and things are looking prety good so far. Plenty of room for improvement

5th nine vs Bundoora - Lost 8-9

A close game all day and in the end one which could have gone either way. Unfortunately it wasn't to be today and the 5ths will improve to take on next week's challenge - Latrobe Uni away.

Under 15s vs Forest Hill - Lost 6-11

It was a pretty though day for U15 guys as pitchers struggled to throw strikes at Forest Hill. While other pitchers were giving up walks, Sebastian pitched perfectly for 1&2/3 innings. Also, all the fielders did well backup behind the pitchers. In hitting, we did very well despite the first game. Will hit 2 for 2, one was in the first inning and brought the first score in the game. The other one was in the last inning that triggered the comeback followed by Steve who smashed to the second baseman and brought Will back. Corey also followed with a beautiful shot to the center field and then Jerome had a superb triple between the left and center field. Patrick and Billy produced more runs with fantastic hits.

Although we need more improvement in defense, in particular pitching, our hitting is looking very good.

Under 13s vs Forest Hill - Drew 9-9 (WON 9-0 wo)

Well the game was over before it began as Forest Hill had only 5 players. A great turn out on the North Balwyn side saw a full squad of 11 all in full uniform and looking sharp! So two players were swapped and we got underway.

Callum started pitching in his first game of baseball and did very well striking out a couple and only giving up a couple of runs before his pitch count expired. Afterwards a couple of walks to each side and a couple of hits allowed the maximum 7 runs to both sides at 10:30 approached.

After all that it was a 9-9 draw, a fitting start really and a good warm up game to begin the season. Next week however will be a different story again Ringwood out at Knox. Big thanks to Simon Ross for umpiring and gear which barely fits a 13 yo!
