North Balwyn have confirmed their 3rd placed finish on the season with an indifferent win over 4th placed Waverley at Myrtle Park on the weekend. The game started well as they held Waverley scoreless after the top of the first. After two walks and 0 out, a hard hit ball back to the pitcher saw the lead off in no mans land. Unfortunately a tag play at the plate saw Waverley have their first out. A sacrifice to score the opening run by Carlos at clean up did the job and North Balwyn was away. A couple of errors then helped North Balwyn to score the remainder of its runs in the bottom of the first with 2 out.
The game was pretty even through the 2nd, 3rd and 4th with both teams trading hits to score runs. However in the 5th, a massive 6 runs on the back of a number of hits allowed 6 runs to be scored to open up a 16-5 lead.
Perhaps thinking of holding Waverley instead of continuing on with the game, Waverley hit back scoring 4 runs in the 6th after a number of simple errors. This lapse in the field coupled with 0 runs in the 6th and 7th had reduced the once 11 run lead to only 5 runs.
In the eigth another lead off walk, combined with 2 consecutive steals allowed the 1st of 3 important runs to cross the plate and effictively sew up the game. A solid 9th inning and the game was over.
Next week is the most important game in the clubs recent history. Much improvement will be needed, both in defence and in the batting box if we are to have a shot at the ultimate goal.
A huge thankyou to Peter Canney for help in preparing the ground (photo next week) and to everyone that turned out to support us. It really made the difference. I am not just saying that. It means so much to have some noise when you are batting. It would be fantatsic to see even more people there on Saturday at Knox, 2:45pm.
