Results

1st Nine vs Forest Hill - WON 5-2

The North Balwyn 1sts have cemented 3rd place with a solid team performance over 1st placed Forest Hill at the weekend at Myrtle Park. All three pitchers performed well and backed up with a flawless defence, proved too much for the ladder leaders Forest Hill on a barmy winters afternoon.

A pitcher's duel all afternoon, Andrew Speed started and in 2 innings gave up 2 hits and two walks for no runs. Carlos the middle reliever specialist called up in the third and did well with 2 innings, no hits, 2 strike outs. In the fnal two digs with a 5-0 lead, complacancy seemed to set in with the worst batting dig against pitching which we should have done better. Trying to hold on for the win instead of continuing, 3 up 3 down eventuated, giving Forest Hill one last chance to win. Despite a couple of walks and a couple of hits, 2 runs was all that Forest Hill could manage, going down in a tight contest 5-2. The North Balwyn pitching staff allowing only 2 runs to the team which has averaged 7 runs a game all season long.

On the hitting front, James had his second big hit in as many weeks and Matt also chimed in with a two out, two RBI single to right. RBIs: Matt 3, Lenny 1. North Balwyn were still out hit 2-4, but walks and sensible batting at times allowed runners to get on and score.

There is still much to improve on before the finals in a couple of weeks, especially in the batting box where it will count going into September. Well done on the important win, in such an important game.

2nd Nine vs Forest Hill - Lost 1-15

Knowing this would be a tough match and coupled with a few guys being unavailable a pretty good outing although the score did not indicate how close the game was going down to Forest Hill 15-1. The first 2 innings were scoreless and then FH started to put on the pressure. Thanks to Ripken and Jimmy for filling in for us this week where Ripken doubled and scored our only run on a double by Steven Yao.

Jimmy had a couple of real good times at bat. Nick came in to pitch real well and will be in the midst of the pitching line up for the finals. We are still in the hunt for finals as we must beat LaTrobe next week to gain a berth. We must be playing at our best over the next couple of weeks to see a strong finish to a relatively successful year as the guys have come a long way on the learning curve and if we stay with it the future looks bright with all of the young talent.

3rd Nine vs Research - WON

A turn around from last week the fielding was a vast improvement over the previous week. Our batting was not great but ok especially from the other blokes in the club. Peter Calpp got a great hit to score 2 runs to start us off and with his excellent pitching effort with Research only scoring 6 runs 2 from a homer, did the job. The way they started the game hitting the ball looked like it could have been a long day at the office but a couple of good line drive catches to Alex and good plays between Alex and Tony at short and second kept our day on track. As I said the older blokes had the better of the batting duels lead the way by Sam and Gary who except for going crazy at himself for grounding out to short had a good day from the batting box. The umpiring was a little bit erratic especially with the high calls, this lead to the younger blokes swinging a pitches not there to hit and leaving a couple that should be swung at though Tom did get bat onto ball twice well done, as it makes the opposition have to make the play. Again this is part of the learning curve and will come in time. Jack did another good job behind the plate.

We wanted to finish the season on a good note beating the bottom 2 sides, one more to go fellows.

4th Nine vs Ringwood - Lost 3-13

It is always difficult playing the top team

5th Nine vs Ringwood - Lost 8-19

We faced the top 1 team in the D Grade today but we were not afraid of them and performed unexpectedly well, especial on the top of 2nd inning, the pitcher- Tristan only pitched 5 balls to let Ringwood's batters 3 on and 3 off. Tristan who had a strong outing on the pitching mound pitched whole game and every batter showed their tenacity hard to support. Nonetheless, Ringwood proved itself to be No. 1 team. Their batting stated to show their power and after they changed the 2nd pitcher who even played in the State Team, we couldn't get any runs from him. However, we didn't have any serious errors in this game and everyone took every play more carefully. Anyway, this was a great game.

Under 13s vs Heathmont - lost 6-13

The boys best offensive effort for the season with 10 players reaching base on 10 hits & 4 walks (including 2 hits each by Ben E & Ben W) with 6 batted in by Ben E, Jerome, Anthony (2), Declan & Tom G. Despite considerable fielding improvement over the season this weeks defensive effort did not quite measure up with 4 Heathmont batters reaching on fielding bobbles at crucial times resulting in a 13-6 loss.

This year has been sensational from an improvement point of view. It is amazing to see how much each kid has improved over the season. This has been the second year with a junior program and provides a good base to vastly improve for next year with at least two teams, under 15s and under 13s. There is much which can be done from a coaching and organisational point of view as well, lots has been learnt with many lessons to make sure that 2007 is even better.

Thanks for the year.

John and Matt.

**DAMLOW NOMINATION**

James Roy, second nomination of the year.

Nominated for:

1 - Straightening his hair

2 - Buying a hair straightener

Coupled with his earlier nomination, he appears to be the leader in the clubhouse but there is still time. Anything else like this, send it in!
