From the desk...

Origin of the Name "World Series" One baseball myth that just won't die is that the "World Series" was named for the New York World newspaper, which supposedly sponsored the earliest contests. It didn't, and it wasn't. In fact, the postseason series between the AL and NL champs was originally known as the "Championship of the World" or "World's Championship Series." That was shortened through usage to "World's Series" and finally to "World Series." This usage can be traced through the annual baseball guides. Spalding's Base Ball Guide for 1887 reported the results of the 1886 postseason series between Chicago, champions of the National League, and St. Louis, champions of the American Association, under the heading "The World's Championship."

As the editor noted, the two leagues "both entitle their championship contests each season as those for the base ball championship of the United States," so a more grandiose name was required to describe the postseason showdown between the two "champions of the United States." But the Spalding Guide which, after all, was published by one of the world's largest sporting goods companies, with a vested interest in bringing baseball to other lands had grander ambitions. By 1890, the Spalding Guide was explaining that "[t]he base ball championship of the United States necessarily includes that of the entire world, though the time will come when Australia will step in as a rival, and after that country will come Great Britain but all that is for the future." This didn't happen, but the name "World's Championship Series" stuck. Reporting on the first modern postseason series, the Red Sox-Pirates battle of 1903, the 1904 Reach Guide called it the "World's Championship Series." By 1912, Reach's headline spoke of the "World's Series," while editor Francis Richter's text still referred to the "World's Championship Series."

The Reach Guide switched from "World's Series" to "World Series" in 1931, retaining the modern usage through its merger with the Spalding Guide and through its final issue in 1941. The separately-edited Spalding Guide used "World's Series" through 1916, switching to "World Series" in the 1917 edition. The Spalding-Reach Guide was replaced as Major League Baseball's semi-official annual by the Sporting News Guide, first published in 1942. The Sporting News Guide used "World's Series" from 1942 through 1963, changing to "World Series" in the 1964 edition. Moreover, the New York World never claimed any connection with postseason baseball. The World was a tabloid much given to flamboyant self-promotion. If it had been involved in any way with sponsoring a championship series, the fact would have been emblazoned across its sports pages for months. I reviewed every issue of the World for the months leading up to the 1903 and 1905 World's Championship Series there's not a word suggesting any link between the paper and the series.

Results

1st Nine vs Westgarth - WON 4-3

A solid defensive effort has seen the 1sts knock off 2nd placed Westgarth with a clutch 2 out hit in the bottom of the last inning to James Roy. Andrew Speed was sensational on the mound this week going the distance, 5 innings, 8 hits, 2Ks, 1BB, 2 earned runs. Tim again lead the way with the bat with 2 hits backed up by, James 1dbl, Billy 1, John 1, Andrew 1. There were still a couple of errors at key times in the match which will have to be ironed out if we are to continue winning towards the end of the season and beyond.

With two games left against each end of the ladder and third spot all but sown up, the chance is there, but it has to be taken.

Eveyone always wants to win the game, in the bottom of the last inning with 2 out. What better time to do it in such an important game. Well done!

2nd Nine vs Westgarth - WON 7-4

A very fiery game this week against Westgarth, we managed to hold out for the win 8-7. Some very good defensive plays by Francisco and David on the left side of the infield saving some runs and thwarting the Westgarth offensive threats. A good start on the mound for Anthony with Aaron doing an excellent job closing it out. Our bats came alive as we did a great job of moving the runners along and getting the hits to bring them home. A very solid team win. Well done guys.

The ladder shows a very interesting run howm with Forest Hill next week and a do or die game against latrobe uni in the last round which will be the battle for 4th. Good luck 2nds!

3rd Nine vs Melton - Lost 15-7

Not really much to say for this match the 15- 7 score in the end was a bit flattering as we scored 2 runs in the first dig and 5 in the last, then called time and game, but at lease we did play the game out to be able to score those 5 runs. On the whole our fielding let us down with missed catches and a couple of wild throws, though Tom Dundon held up his end starting the day off well for us taking the chances that went his way, well done Tom. On a good day a couple of harder chances would also have gone our way but nothing did. Not to take anything away from Melton as they hit the ball well. Paul pitched all but one out as the game was mostly over he was kept on.

Our batting was only fair, we got bat on ball a number of times but not solidly and they were able to throw us out. All in all not a great game of baseball especially having travel to Melton although it was a beautiful day and it was great to be outside. We are looking forward to our final 2 matches against the bottom 2 sides and hopefully can finish off the season with 2 good wins.

4th Nine vs Melton - Lost 5-18

Its a long drive to Melton only to have 7 players. With this in mind and almost every one was out of position we gave it our best. Jason Povey was robbed a clear home run, so had to settle with a ground rule double and Glenis Innes hit twice for her 1st hits in baseball. Well done! Newcomer Karen Edwards also did well in the batting box. Not a bad effort in the field also. Score, 5-18.

5th Nine vs RMIT - Lost 7-22

At first, we took the lead 4 to 2 when second inning finished. While I was thinking that we might win this match, the rest of the team probably did as well and the situation was completely changed. The errors started to happen which influenced players mood. RMIT started getting scores by these errors, even with Matt who was a strong pitcher on the mound and our batters tried harder to catch the score up in the top of 3rd and 4th innings, however, the batters couldn't support timely. Thus, we lost this game as score 7- 22. Hope everyone could handle every play more seriously in the coming game!

Under 13s vs Heathmont - lost 6-13

The boys best offensive effort for the season with 10 players reaching base on 10 hits & 4 walks (including 2 hits each by Ben E & Ben W) with 6 batted in by Ben E, Jerome, Anthony (2), Declan & Tom G. Despite considerable fielding improvement over the season this weeks defensive effort did not quite measure up with 4 Heathmont batters reaching on fielding bobbles at crucial times resulting in a 13-6 loss.

This year has been sensational from an improvement point of view. It is amazing to see how much each kid has improved over the season. This has been the second year with a junior program and provides a good base to vastly improve for next year with at least two teams, under 15s and under 13s. There is much which can be done from a coaching and organisational point of view as well, lots has been learnt with many lessons to make sure that 2007 is even better.

Thanks for the year.

John and Matt.
