UPDATE ON DAVID BOELL

Good to hear that Dave is now back home recovering after his operation last week. For those who didn't know, David Boell had a pretty large operation last week. Will be a couple of weeks before he can drive but we look forward to seeing him down at the ground when he is fit enough. With his golf, the Doc reckons he will be able to chip and putt in a couple of weeks which is good news as he couldn't before the op!

Keeping it in the family

This week in the 3rds there were two and almost three father son combinations. Peter and Tony Clapp, Alex and Peter Canney and almost Jack Rintoul and his father. Recently there have been a couple of other combinations, Jono and Al Cornell and of course the three Cranstons, Barry, David and Michelle (of course Michelle isn't a son, but you get the idea). It is fantastic for fathers to get the opportunity to play with their kids, also speaks volumes about the history of the club and its members.

Results

1st Nine - BYE

Although the 1sts had a BYE, games over the weekend produced very interesting results. Waverley and Bundoora played off and drew 6-6. This result keeps Waverley 2 games behind North Balwyn and still with a worse percentage, which means that North Balwyn is 2 games clear of 4th spot. With 4 games left for the season and only 3 for Waverley, third spot is looking a more promising prospect by the week. The final game to decide the spot will come this week when 3rd and 4th playoff at Napier Park. This is truly the biggest game in years for the 1sts.

In the other game of interest, 5th placed Diamond Creek, played off against 2nd placed Westgarth, going down by 1 run.

3rd Nine vs Knox - Lost 8-3

The Thirds lost a very strongly contested game against second-placed Knox. With the absence of Paul Conheady and Jimmy Lee we welcomed Ben Hart and Peter Canney into the team. Our failure to hit safely was a key factor in the game which saw 11 runners left on base. However our defence was outstanding with Peter Clapp pitching a great game with 5 Ks, 1 BB and giving the infield numerous ground balls. Alex Canney at shortstop had a day out with 5 assists and 4 put-outs, and with making all 3 outs in one inning. Hits to Peter Clapp (2), Alex Canney, Garry Shipp(double).

Big thanks to the entire Knox team for coming over to our new clubrooms for a drink and a sausage after the match, its good to get that kind of support from visiting teams.

3rd Nine vs Croydon - Lost 9-8

Unfortunately, another one that got away and again to Croydon in the last dig. Croydon scored three in the first which would have been more without a great series of relay throws from Jimmy Lee to Alex Canney to Barry Cranston to put out a triple hitter who overshot third. We scored five in the third but with none out and two on, failed to take advantage of the big inning.

Leading 7/6 going into the last we added a further run but in the equaliser, Croydon hit solidly and through four hits and a fielding blemish scored the necessary runs to win with none out. We had played very well defensively and generally batted very well but failed to capitalise with strikeouts occuring at crucial times. Despite just losing again, we are a team who is enjoying its baseball greatly with the players supporting and encouraging each
other throughout.

4th Nine vs Knox - Lost 5-22

The 4ths did quite well today considering that Knox had only lost one game all year. They were very experienced and hit very well, dispatching pretty much everything that came near the strike zone. Fielding was quite good overall with only a couple of errors. A good catch too by Lin in right-field. Lets hope that the good form can continue next week against Bundoora.

5th Nine vs Bundoora - Won (wo) 9:0

Today (29/07/2006) 5th team was against Bundoora. Unfortunately, when we arrived their home ground, we just got the news which they call out this game because they didnˇ¦t have enough players. According to the baseball rule, we would win this game as the score 9:0. Thats luck that we gained the second win in this season. We wish that we don't need the way to win the game. Lets hope that next week we have a team to play.

Under 13s vs Ringwood

It was great to see 100% turn out from the team (11 players) for the last home game of the year and the boys started well by posting two “zeros” for the visitors (including a 4 pitch second inning by Seb DUNBAR supported by great fielding) coupled with an early RBI double by Jerome COLES bringing in Ben EBBAGE for an early 1-0 lead. Alas the boys bats went cold with 8 strike-outs and the visitors sprinkled hits at the right time amongst 11 walks conceded to run out victors 13-2.

There are amazingly only 2 games left for the season. This week against Forest Hill and the final game of the year will be against Heathmont (top of the table) at Knox.

Thanks to John & the NB management for putting on breakfast afterwards

Training - Wed 4:45pm to 5:45pm at our home ground.
