Long Weekend - No Games

Results

1st Nine vs Bundoora - WON 8-4

A solid win over Bundoora on the weekend in a game where we were never really threatned. Yoshi was superb on the mound despite only arriving 20mins before the start of the game due to work commitments. The game started slowly as teams worked each other out, before Bundoora opened the scoring in the third. However that is where the game changed. Over the next few innings, a string of hits (of which all were singles) allowed North Balwyn to pile on 8 runs to go into the last with an 8-1 lead. A couple of hits to Bundoora in the last inning did nothing to but put some respectability back on the scoreboard as North Balwyn dominated its way to an 8-4 win. Big thanks to the 5ths for all of the support and for Jerry and Aaron for hanging around and getting in the game. Support really makes a difference.

The 1sts have now played everyone and have only lost to third placed Forest Hill, which at the weekend, lost to Westgarth 6-3. At the long mid-season break, North Balwyn go into the break with a solid platform for the rest of the season.

2nd Nine vs Bundoora - WON 10-8

A hard fought battle for a win against Bundoora 10-8. The first inning was a bit rough as Randall struggled on the mound hitting 2 batters with 2 strikes each and giving up 3 runs. We bounced back to score one in the bottom of the inning and added 2 more in the second to level the game. The next 2 digs went well as there was only one base runner and some solid defensive plays. Nick had two outstanding catches in left field over the shoulder running flat out away from the infield. Dave had another great game at third showing signs of the elder Cranston down there. We are now getting our eye in as we had seven walks that turned in to 3 runs. A great 3rd inning as Victor and Jerry started out with 2 hits and we kept on rolling to score 7 for the dig. Aaron came on to close and did a good job but we were a bit loose in the field. This game was a bit closer than it should have been as we gave up 5 in the 4th dig and probalaby should have been out of the inning with only 1 run scored. A tough match but we hung in there and ground out a win.

I know that this is the same picture as last week, but someone stole my baseball bag out of my car which had in it my digital camera.

The seconds head to the break with a 0.500 win / loss ratio. Things are looking promising this season with a good young, quick team. If a bit of improvement can be found, the team can go a long way.

3rd Nine vs Melton - WON 9-8

An hour + later and we arrive at Melton, But with 9 - 8 win happy to travel (what a nice drive). 4 of the first 6 at bat base on balls, a couple of wild pitches and quick base runners scores 2 then a nice hit to right field by Jon Cornell, first game into the 3's, to score a couple more with an error by Melton saw us with 5 runs first dig. Jimmy started on the mound and Peter relieved middle of first to keep them to 4. We had a 4 run second innings and they had a 4 run third to keep it tight. No runs either side in the last 2 innings resulted in a fitting result for the day. Very happy with the batting this week, although not a lot of hits there was a much better pitch selection. If we can cut out those crucial fielding errors we can hopefully see this result more often.

Well done to all.

4th Nine vs Melton- Lost 5-14

A game we should have done a whole lot better, however there was signs of improvement. But again a few errors at crucial times and lack of batting disciple let us down. Matt Wang a standout with 3 hits and Sam Chan catching a great game in his first game back from Brisbane.

5th Nine vs Forest Hill - Lost 2-19

A game which wasn't as close as last week, but more fun was had by all, which after all is the aim of the game. Will Huang started things well by getting on base and stealing second and third before a hit allowed him to score. A couple of errors however combined at the wrong time to allow Forest Hill to accrue a large lead.

Under 13s vs Forest Hill - Won 9-0 (wo)

The under 14 carnival was on this week and Forest Hill was missing two of its players. With that, they only had 5. So we played a practice match and I think the final score was a 7-12 loss to Forest Hill. The fog was so bad that visibility was restricted to 100-200m on the drive up. Weird. By the game time rolled around it was easier to see, but still not clear.

Forest Hill opened up with 7 runs in the first inning on a string of hits and from then on North Balwyn started to play. The highlight of the day was a big hit to Niall in the last inning against a very quick Forest Hill pitcher.
